Rick....Molly and Doc's wife ,started the show trying to cheer up Carol with singing Dancin In The Streets. Ed can't make up his mind to either go on a safari with Kelly R or be there for Carol. So he gifts her a " Tuning Fork" to mend the bridge and she ends up running away from it as he Yells over the humming fork. Doc Mike decides to trap Ed and Carol and force them to hash it. Ed and Carol talk things over as the wackos of the bowling alley play Scrabble. Carol sprains her ankle. Ed tells her about the white knight and horse gone wrong and she tells him why Dennis walked out. Carol repeats the much earlier line about fearing the loss of Ed if he found out what she is really like...being not the fantasy she thinks Ed sees in her( how would she know?..she never gives him a chance because...she's afraid she'd loose Ed ..so on and so on..circular arguement for sure),,anyway..ed reduces her to a defenseless position at which time she reacts by trying to kiss him( nonverbal communication) and Ed says " what are you doing Carol?" and she replied, " I...I don't know" To which Ed replied,," I gotta get off this ride( or train or whatever)..They each go their seperate ways at end while a Dylan songs plays. I wish I could remember the tune.
Anyway, how we use words to deceive ourselves,, to deflect the truth,, seemed to be next step in the second season's exploration or self deception. The show apparently upset alot of folks and was the final straw for many. I may be dark on this, but it has a Letterman sense of humor at that level....just taking it at a sexual tension level. Dig a little bit deeper and its interesting and thought provoking which is astonishing for commercial TV. Yes there is a struggle between Ed and Carol,,kind of like the struggle we all go thru in our dailey choices of being secure or taking a chance. Carol has had the first half of the second season to show what happens when " secure" side of an individual dominates...Decisions made out of fear and insecurity end up poorly. We already saw what happens when Ed the adventurous chance taker tried it alone...he scooped up his cell phone and came running back to StuckeyVille. I look foward to see how the writers, producers and actors further explore the dicotomy of the human condition................MEL
