A Far Greater Treasure

Chapter 01

Carrie felt her tense muscles relax as the plane halted and the engines were turned off. She took several short, shallow breaths and willed herself to let go of the armrests. With shaky hand she unfastened her seatbelt. Mike hid his amusement; his wife hated landings, but she would strangle him if she knew he thought it was cute—no matter how shaky her hands were. He felt anxious to get off the plane; it had been a very long flight with an unexpected layover in L.A. It had been six hours of just waiting while they fixed the plane or rebooked them or whatever the problem had been. Carrie had eagerly dug into the latest issues of Glamour and Cosmopolitan claiming, “This is what I’ve missed about America!” But Mike was in a hurry to go home. He strained his neck to peer out the window. Jeremy elbowed him. “For Christ’s sake, Dad, you’re going to flatten me!” he said irritably; his less-than-pleasant awakening to the flight attendant’s seatbelt precautions had not put him in a good mood. Carrie smiled—both at Mike’s eagerness and Jeremy’s grouchiness. “Cut it out, boys. What would Gran say?” she questioned, her eyes flashing with mischief.

*~*~

Mike and Carrie exchanged a quick, painful glance and moved forward slowly on hesitant, shaky legs. Directly ahead stood Mickey, a cane at his side, and the still-slender Maggie, her red hair streaked with gray. And next to them, looking terribly small sat Alice—in a wheelchair. Mike knelt in front of her first, hugging her gently.

“Michael,” she said. “It’s good to have you home. You’ve been gone too long.”

“I’ve missed you, Gran,” he managed to whisper.

“And I have missed you—even if I haven’t forgiven you and Carrie for not having the wedding here in Salem.” Turning her head, Alice smiled and extended a hand to Carrie. “You’re radiant, my dear. I know this is a few years in coming, but welcome to the Horton family.” Carrie beamed and hugged her.

“Thank you, Grandmother Alice. I am so very happy to be a part of it. But here is someone else to whom you owe a long overdue welcome. Gran, this is your great-grandson, Jeremy.” Three mouths dropped simultaneously.

“Jeremy!” Mickey gasped.

“Why didn’t you tell us?” Maggie interjected.

“I wanted to surprise everyone,” Jeremy volunteered, a little shyly. His grouchiness faded at their evident delight.

“Jeremy?” Gran asked, her eyes misting over and a tremble in her voice. With instinctive reverence, he knelt in front of her.

“It’s me, Gran,” he whispered. With surprising strength, Alice pulled him to her. In the circle of her arms, Jeremy relaxed. Something—he wasn’t quite sure what—crept into every corner of his heart. His whole life he’d wanted this feeling of being loved by a family; and now here it was!

“Jeremy, I am so glad you’re here,” she said. And he knew he’d finally come home.

*~*~

Conversations and laughter flowed around Carrie as she sat contentedly in the Brady Pub. Friends and family had gathered here to welcome home the long lost Hortons. So much had changed since they’d left—most of it for the better. Bo and Hope were finally married, even if it had taken a long time. Carrie had only shaken her head as Hope gaily explained the John-being-Isaac’s-father-with-Hope-as-Princess-Gina-but-getting-Marlo’s-baby mess. All she’d understood was in the end Isaac was John and Hope’s, but Bo and Hope were raising him along with their own 2-year old daughter, Alisa. Abe and Lexie had been heartbroken. It had taken a while for healing to come, but with the birth of their own daughter, Cara, they had finally been able to release their bitterness and rejoin their circle of friends.

Shawn and Belle had become a close couple in the past years; Shawn had made Bo proud by following in his footsteps and joining the Salem P.D.; Belle was struggling through law school. Phillip Kiriakis was all grown up and dating the Wesley’s daughter, Chloe. She was, thankfully, nothing like her parents, Carrie noted. She was almost through medical school; it seems Craig had inspired her to be a surgeon. Brady Black was going to school and John and Marlena seemed perfectly content. Since resident villain, Stefano, had departed for Europe their lives had remained fairly calm.

Roman was retired and spent a lot of time with Sami and Will and visiting Eric—who was in New York. Roman had informed Carrie that he was a very successful photographer for one of the modeling agencies there. But when Carrie inquired about a conspicuously absent Sami he’d only evaded the question. “She told me to tell you that she’d call you soon and set up a lunch date; but she made me promise not to breathe a word more.” With a laugh Carrie had sent him on his way. She prayed that she and Sami could start their relationship over as grown women instead of catty girls fighting over an unworthy man. They were half-sisters, after all.

There were so many changes. But in they end they were all still the people she loved and leaned one. Oh! It was good to be home.
