Carrie shoulders slumped with relief as she turned. The crowd moved forward, blocking Carrie where she was
as her eyes found Mike's. A soft smile came to her lips as she saw the gratitude and love shining back at her.
Mickey grabbed his arm and maneuvered Mike out of the crowd, and Mike's eyes stayed locked on Carrie
until he disappeared into the crowd.

Carrie closed her eyes, letting out a deep breath. She raised her eyes skyward. "Thank you," she said softly.

*************************************************

Carrie rushed into the Brady Pub, and was immediately greeted by endless hugs.

Marlena gave Carrie a huge hug. "You did it, sweetie girl."

Carrie smiled and hugged Marlena again. Her smile faded as she gazed around the room. "Where's Mike? I
thought he came here with all of you."

"He did, but he just left to go look for you."

Carrie smiled. "I'm gonna go find him." She turned and quickly headed out the door.

*************************************************

Carrie shoes scuffed over the dock as she looked worriedly about her. Where is he?
She turned-and her lips curved into a smile as she found herself staring into familiar blue eyes once again.

"Carrie?"
Carrie turned suddenly at the sound of his voice. He came closer, ducking under her umbrella with her. "What
are you doing here?"

Carrie hesitated a moment before answering him. "I came to find you.. to apologize."

Mike stared down at her. "Really? I was just about to come find you..."

She ran towards him, throwing her arms around him. A loud bang shattered the silence, and Carrie went still
as Mike's arms closed around her. Mike pulled her back, wide green eyes flying up to his. Carrie looked down,
bringing her hand to her side. She looked at her hand in shock, a bright red smear running over her fingers.
"Mike..."

"Oh, my God..." Mike held her close as her legs gave way from under her, and she slowly sank to the ground.
"Carrie? No, please...oh, God, no..."

Carrie reached her hand toward Mike's face, but it dropped weakly against her chest. "Mike...I love you..."

"No, don't...hang on, baby," he whispered desperately as he lifted her limp body in his arms. Carrie winced,
her head falling weakly against Mike's shoulder. "Hang on."

*************************************************

Mike burst through the doors of the hospital. Lexie rushed over to him. "Mike, my God, what happened?"

"Somebody get a gurney over here, now!" Mike yelled. A couple nurses quickly wheeled one out, and Mike
reluctantly laid Carrie on it.

Mike tried to follow, but Lexie held him back. "Mike, you'll do more harm than good in there. Just let us
handle it, okay?"

She rushed through the swinging doors, and Mike stared helplessly through the window at the medical team
fighting to save Carrie's life. "Fight, Carrie..please. Don't give up now." He looked down, his shirt soaked in
blood. He touched his hand to it, bringing it away bright red. He clutched his hand into a fist, his eyes
squeezing shut. "Dear God, please--don't take her from me."

The machine monitoring Carrie's heartbeat stopped blipping, and Mike's gaze snapped to the window again.
A thin green line threaded across the monitor, a deathlike monotone sound filling the room.

Remember Me~Part 13

Claire threw her gun into the river, smiling triumphantly at the memory of Carrie's body falling limply against
Mike's. "Now both of them will get exactly what they deserve-Carrie will die, and that bastard Mike Horton
will be next." She sighed disappointedly at the memory of Jake. She knew better than to hire outside help, but
she thought he could be depended on. Oh, well, she thought resignedly, so much for hired help. "I guess that
just proves what I've always thought--when you want something right, you just have to do it yourself."

"My sentiments exactly, Dr. McIntyre." Claire whirled around to be met by Abe and two other officers. "This
time, you're not going to be leaving unexpectedly. You're going to be sitting in a jail cell for quite some time to
come. Cuff the lady, please."

*************************************************
Mike pressed his hand to the glass desperately. "You can't die, Carrie," he whispered, squeezing his eyes shut.
"Please, Carrie. Fight it, you hear me? Fight."

Mike lifted his head, watching as the team tried desperately to revive her. "Heck with this," he muttered
under his breath, shoving the door open.

"Get the paddles. Set them at 200. Clear!"
Carrie's body jerked, lifting off the table. The monitor remained flat. "Nothing," Lexie whispered. "I'm going
to try it again. Okay, everybody clear!" Carrie's body jerked again.
A weak blip broke the flatline, then another until they flowed into each other.

Lexie smiled, letting out a deep breath. "Thank you, God. Okay let's get..." Lexie stopped mid-sentence as a
soft mumble rose up from the table. Lexie leaned down closer to Carrie.

"Lexie, what is it?" Mike asked worriedly. "What did she say?"

Lexie lifted her head, a soft smile curving her lips as she looked at him. "She said 'Mike.' "

*************************************************

Carrie stirred against the pillows, turning her head, smiling at him as he squeezed her hand. "Hi."

"Hi, yourself. How are you feelin'?"

Carrie sat up a little. "Better, I think. Besides, the doctor said he'd let me out of her in a day or so." She
winced as a sharp pain shot through her side. "But let's just hold off on running that marathon for a while,
okay?"

Mike nodded, chuckling. "Okay, I'll make sure and scratch that off the list." He paused. "They caught Claire.
Abe witnessed her throwing the gun into the river just a little while after she shot you." Mike shook his head.
" I can't help but feel responsible for this whole mess. If only..."

"Oh, no you don't. This is not your fault, do you hear me? None of it."

Mike smiled resignedly, nodding. He took a deep breath, turning his gaze on her. "Your dad told me what you
did helping me out. Thank you, but..." Mike shook his head, chuckling softly as he let out a frustrated groan.
"You stubborn, infuriating..." a uncontrollable smile tugged at his lips,"wonderful, amazing, beautiful little..."
he leaned forward, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "I swear, if you ever scare me like that again, I may lock
you up in your room forever and throw away the key."

Carrie reached up, tenderly touching his cheek. "Will you stay locked in there with me?" she choked out
through her tears.

Mike's eyes glowed with love as he turned his face into her palm, pressing it to his lips as he kissed it gently,
then touching his lips to her forehead. "Absolutely."

A firm knock sounded at the door, and they both looked up, Mike's eyes flickering in surprise. "Austin?"

"Hey, Mike." He looked down at Carrie. "Hey, Carrie. How're you feeling?"

"Okay, I guess," Carrie answered hesitantly as she stared up at Austin in confusion.

Mike slowly backed toward the door. He felt as though he was intruding. "I'll leave you two alone to talk." He
turned and headed out the door, closing it silently behind him.

Carrie looked up at Austin, a hesitant smile on her lips.

Austin smiled reassuringly as he pulled a chair up next to the bed. "Carrie, it's okay if you don't know me.
Marlena told me what happened about your fall, and you losing your memory. I'm really sorry."

"It's okay," Carrie answered. "It's been coming back in bits and pieces ever since."

"Good, good..." Austin looked down at her again. He opened his mouth to speak, then hesitated. "Carrie, I'm
sorry about things ending between us the way they did. I never meant to hurt you like that. I just that ending
it as soon as possible was the best for both of us. I never meant to upset you like that by sending someone else
to serve you with the divorce papers. I just..."

"Wait a minute," Carrie interrupted. "Did you say divorce papers?"

Austin looked at her in confused suprise. "Yeah, I filed for a divorce so I could marry Sami, your sister. You
signed them the day you..." Austin's eyebrows rose. "You mean you thought that we were still married?"

An unconcious smile drifted across Carrie's lips. "So you and I....we're not married?"

Austin smiled and shook his head. "No." He took her hands in his. "I could tell you were in love with Mike,
and then I realized I wasn't jealous or angry. All I felt was relief...and happiness that you'd found somebody
who loved you like you deserve. He's a very lucky guy, Carrie."

Carrie smiled thankfully. "I'm pretty darn lucky myself." She laid a hand on his arm. "Thank you, Austin."
She looped her arms around his neck in a warm hug.

Mike swallowed hard, then slowly nodded at the sight of Carrie in Austin's arms. "That's how it should be."
But his memory betrayed him, taking him back...he wouldn't ever be able to forget her...he couldn't...

"Honey! I'm so sorry to keep you waiting..."

The "honey" had barely registered to Mike as he felt Carrie's hands sliding up his chest and around his
shoulders. He could only stand there, dumbfounded as she ran her fingers through his hair, kissing him
soundly.

"You are so adorable.." she purred, wrapping her arms around his waist. Carrie turned, batting her eyes
innocently at Craig as if noticing him for the first time. She teased her fingers across his chest, her smile full
of catty seduction as she gazed up at him. "Aren't you gonna introduce me to your friend?" She asked, kissing
his cheek and leaning her head against his shoulder.

Mike couldn't help the smile that tugged at his lips. He hadn't been able to remember his own name at that
moment, much less Craig's. The only thought his brain would register was Carrie...and how badly he wanted
to kiss her like that again...

Mike shook his head and turned away from Carrie's door. No, it wasn't meant to be. He would stand back, let
her marriage have a chance. She deserved that.

*************************************************

Carrie sat up on the edge of her bed, gingerly readjusting herself.

Lexie came in, smiling. "Hey, it's good to see you up. How are you feeling?"

"A little sore yet, but better." She looked expectantly at the door. "Where's Mike?"

Lexie straightened, her smile fading. "You mean he didn't tell you?"

Carrie shook her head. "Tell me what?"

"Mike's taken an indefinite leave of absence. He left town last night."

Remember Me-Part 14

Mike let his suitcase top fall shut, his resolve to pack and leave the memories fading as he moved slowly
toward the window, watching the rain as it pelted swiftly against the window, the low threatening rumble of
thunder sounding in the distance.

Looks like we're in for quite a storm, Mike thought as a quick flash of lightning illuminated the glass. Mike
stared off into the rain, unable to fight the memory as it surfaced. It seemed so long ago now...

Mike lifted a hesitant hand to her face, unable to say any other words than those three simple ones coming
straight from his heart.

"I love you," He murmured gently. He leaned down slowly, cradling her cheek against his palm, their lips
barely touching in the slightest whisper of a kiss....

Mike rolled over in the midst of his dreams, dimly aware of her shivering form beside him as his arm went
protectively around her.

Whether the feel of her warm lips brushing over his was dream or reality, Mike didn't know--and didn't care.
He pulled her against him, finally kissing her like he'd been dying to for months. A gentle warmth stretched
through him as she returned the kiss, and Mike's hand tightened on her shoulder as he felt her hand glide over
his arm.

Mike shook his head. You have to let go, his conscience told him again. You have to.

~How do I, get through one night without you...~

Mike moved to push himself off the wall, but his hands stilled, dropping to his sides uselessly as the music
floated around him, his heart swelling painfully. He squeezed his eyes shut, his head resting wearily against
the wall. "Please, dear God, don't do this to me," he whispered in a desperate plea.

~And tell me now, how do I live without you, i want to know; how do I breathe without you...~

"Do you remember the first time we danced to this song?"

Mike's eyes flew open as she emerged hesitantly from the shadows of his open doorway, the warm green of
her eyes glistening with tears as she moved forward. He stared at her in disbelief, her eyes never wavering
from his.

"It was right after we toasted that couple for their anniversary while we were at that party in the hotel in L.A.
Then we had to kiss to keep up our little charade to fool Craig, remember?" She laughed softly, her smile
softening as she moved closer. "But my favorite is when we drove to that hilltop, and then it came on the car
radio, and we turned it up and danced right there under the stars..." Her voice caught in her throat as she
looked into his eyes, searching. "Remember?" her voice broke as she spoke through the tears.

Mike's hand shook as he brought it to her cheek, his vision blurring as he felt tears of his own clouding his
eyes. He smiled tremulously, tracing a finger across her lips. "I remember," he whispered unsteadily.

Carrie's eyes closed, and she turned her face into his hand, pressing a kiss to his palm. She slid her fingers
over the back of his hand, cradling it against her cheek.

Mike stared at her hand, her fingers bare. He grasped her fingertips. Carrie's eyes fluttered open, Mike's lips
parting in surprise as he turned questioning eyes to Carrie's. "Carrie... where's your ring?"

"Austin came to see me in the hospital..." She paused, a soft smile drifting over her lips. "I signed divorce
papers before the accident, Mike. He and Sami are married."

"So what you're saying is..."

"I'm not married," she finished for him. Mike stared down at the floor in disbelief. "Or, at least, not yet."

Mike's eyes flew up to hers, a hesitant spark of hope coming to life as she stepped forward into his arms.
"So," she said gently, attempting to dispell their tears, "do you think I could talk you into marrying me?"

A joyous smile began on Mike's lips, then quickly faded as he shook his head. "No, we can't, not like this..."

Carrie stared up at him, the hurt evident in her eyes.

"If we're going to do this, we're going to do it right." Mike reached into his pocket, opening his hand to reveal
a beautiful, fragile diamond ring. "I found this a long time ago, and until now, I never thought I'd be able to
give to you." It glowed softly in the dim light as Mike slipped it to the knuckle of his index finger. He kissed
Carrie's hand tenderly, falling to one knee before her.

"Whenever I look back over the most treasured moments of my life, the same person is always right there,
sharing them right along with me, Carrie--you." He grasped her hand tightly. "I don't want to make any more
of those memories without you, Carrie-I can't. Please, marry me."

Carrie bit her lip, uncaring as the tears streamed freely down her cheeks. Her lips trembled into a brilliant
smile, a sound that was half sob, half laugh and pure joy escaping her. "Now, how could a girl turn down an
offer like that?"

Mike smiled softly. "Can I take that as a yes?"

Carrie laughed happily. "Yes...YES!!" Mike came to his feet as she threw her arms around him, his arms
closing swiftly around her as he picked her up in a tight hug, swinging her in a circle. He set her back on her
feet, gathering her into his arms as he kissed her tenderly.

They pulled apart an eternity later, breathless. "Carrie, there's one other thing."

She gazed lovingly up at him. "What?"

"I forgot to tell you that I love you."

Carrie felt her heart swell with love. "You didn't need to," she whispered as he pulled her close again. "I
remember."

Remember Me: Epilogue

The usually unflappable Alice Horton's eyes grew wide. "Oh, no..."

Carrie gasped as the dogs charged at Shawn-Douglas, making a mad dive for his plate, sending his hot dog
flying. Carrie quickly grabbed Alice's shoulder as it sailed in their direction. "Alice, duck!!" The airborne hot
dog spiraled just inches over their heads, landing on top of Shawn-D's overturned plate. The dogs went after
it ravenously, flipping the plate over and slurping it clean with ease.

Carrie and Alice straightened slowly. Alice shook her head, giggling. She and Carrie looked at each other,
and soon both were in uncontrollable peals of laughter.

"I swear, that yellow lab next door is old, but she can still hop over the fence like she was a young thing
again." Alice wiped her eyes, and Carrie smiled at her as she continued. "She has always made our Fourth of
July picnics...memorable, to say the least."

Carrie giggled, slapping Mike's shoulder playfully as she relaxed back on the bench. "You made that up."

He gave her a mock look of hurt. "I did not."

Carrie shook her head as she giggled, still not remembering. "I threw my hot dog at you?"

Mike nodded. "Yeah, and your potato salad. Not on purpose..." His eyes gleamed as he grinned at her. "At
least I don't think it was." He readjusted to face her. "Remember? There was that big dog that lived next
door? She jumped over the fence and made a beeline right toward you."

Carrie leaned forward, staring off in front of her. "Wait a minute....um..." she snapped her fingers, turning to
him in delight. "It was a big yellow lab! I remember!"

Mike nodded, returning her smile. "That's right. She startled you, and by accident, your plate flew up in the
air..."

"And you had the misfortune of being in the line of fire," Carrie finished for him.

Mike shrugged and laughed. "One way to get an extra hot dog."

Carrie couldn't help the grin that tugged at the corner of her mouth at the memory. "Alice, have you seen my
husband?"

Alice's gaze moved over her shoulder as Carrie felt strong arms slide around her waist from behind. She
winked at Carrie. "Speak of the devil..."

"And the devil appears." Mike's deep voice vibrated close to her ear as he nuzzled at her neck. Mike gave his
grandmother a look of mock indignation. "Gran, I thought all grandmothers thought of their grandchildren
as the perfect little angels we all are."

"Of course we do, dear," she answered, reaching up to pat his cheek. "But then after the first three months or
so, we realize those angel feathers do get a bit--rumpled--now and again." She smiled. "Now take your lovely
wife wherever it was you were about to whisk her off to and enjoy the fireworks." With that, Alice turned and
headed into the house.

Mike shook his head in amazement. "I swear, that woman can read minds."

Carrie looked up at Mike, puzzled. "Why is that?"

"Well..." Carrie gasped, then giggled as Mike scooped her up in his arms. "I actually was intending to whisk
my lovely wife off somewhere."

Carrie twined her arms around Mike's neck as he headed off towards the grove of trees beyond the fence.
"Really?" Carrie raised an eyebrow. "May I ask where?"

Mike shrugged nonchalantly. "Oh...just off to enjoy the fireworks--alone."

*************************************************

Carrie leaned back against Mike's chest, stretching her legs out to her side and closing her eyes in
contentment as Mike's lips brushed over her temple. "Leave it to you to make a blanket stretched out on the
grass in your grandmother's backyard the most romantic spot in town." A loud crackle, echoed a second later
by a loud boom sounded above them as the sky was illuminated in bright bursts of color. Carrie gasped softly,
gazing up into the sky in wonder.

She dropped her eyes after a long moment, to watch Mike's profile as he gazed up into the sky, his face
illuminated by the brilliant display above them...

"Carrie, they just gave me the job of Chief-of-Staff."
Carrie gasped, a smile of shocked happiness curving her lips. "Oh, my God...I don't believe this...yes, I do
believe this, this is..." Her hands fisted in frustrated joy,"the best, Mike, it's the most amazing thing..."

Carrie vaulted herself into Mike's waiting arms, and he lifted her off her feet, holding her tightly as he pressed
his cheek to her shoulder. His eyes glowed with love as he cradled her in his arms. "I owe this all to you...you
never gave up on me." He pulled her tighter into his arms, his eyes closing in contentment.

Carrie pulled back, and Mike reluctantly released her. "How could I?" Carrie's smile softened as her eyes fell
momentarily to Mike's lips before they lifted to his. "You know how I feel about you," she whispered in a soft
rasp.

Mike looked down at herhis heart thudding against his ribs in disbelief. Fireworks exploded over their heads,
illuminating his face as his eyes searched hers. Did she really say ?...

Carrie's breath caught as Mike's lips brushed hesitantly over hers, and she leaned up on her toes, running her
fingers through his hair. Mike let out a deep breath, gathering her into his arms as their kiss deepened,
rivaling the streaks of color exploding across the sky above them...

Mike felt Carrie's eyes on him, and turned his head to look at her. "What?" he asked in a low whisper.

Carrie shook her head, smiling softly. She leaned forward to kiss him, sliding a hand around the back of his
neck, pulling him close. They fell back on the blanket in each other's arms, their lips meeting in a kiss of joy,
happiness, magic--and pure love. "Nothing," she whispered softly. "Just remembering."
