“I just think we would both feel more comfortable in our own rooms. Please, Carrie, I don’t want to argue with you
about this.”

Carrie knew this was a losing battle. “Fine, we’ll get two rooms.”

Mike smiled at her and then got out of the car.

“And for your information, I was comfortable sharing a room with you last night…very comfortable.” Carrie
whispered to herself.

It didn’t take long for them to get their rooms. Carrie plopped down on her bed and let out an audible sigh. As she
stared at the ceiling, her mind wondered back to last night and waking up in Mike’s arms. Everything had felt so right,
like she was finally home. Mike’s words had ripped through her heart, though. He thought that she was thinking he
was Austin. I guess he would. After all, he doesn’t know that I am totally and completely in love with him.

Suddenly, Carrie had an idea. She jumped off the bed and started rummaging through her suitcase.

In the next room, Mike lifted up a silent prayer, thanking God that he would not have to spend another night alone
with Carrie. I just wouldn’t be able to control myself. I love her so much, but spending the night with her last
night was pure torture. To be that close to her, to wake up with her in my arms, but to not be able to show her
my love…I just couldn’t handle another night of that.

Mike was brought out of his thoughts by a knock on the door. He smiled, knowing who he would find on the other
side. But when he opened the door, no one was there. Mike was about to close the door when he noticed a piece of
paper on the floor. He picked it up and read it.

Mike,
Get dressed up and meet me at the club next door.
love,
Carrie

Mike looked both ways down the hall, but Carrie was no where in sight. He smiled and went back inside to get ready
for the evening.

**

The High Note was full of patrons when Mike arrived. The band had just switched to a slow song and the shuffle of
people onto and off of the dance floor created mass confusion. Mike glanced around the tables that were situated
around the bar. Off to one corner, he saw her. The sight before him took his breath away. Her hair was up, leaving
her neck vulnerable to kisses. Her dress was black and short, accentuating her slender legs. Mike thought about what
it would be like to run his hand up her leg, from her ankle to her thigh. Mike’s attention was drawn to her lips as she
gracefully raised her glass to take a sip of her wine. As Carrie set the wineglass down, her own eyes were drawn to
Mike’s stare. The minute their eyes met, she, too, was in a trance. Mike’s hair was neatly combed, as if crying for
Carrie to run her fingers through it. His light gray suit was accented by a blue tie. Carrie thought about what it would
be like to slowly run her hands up under the suit jacket and slid it off his shoulders. She shivered with excitement at
the idea of undressing him.

With out warning, Mike started walking toward her. Carrie felt her heart race even more with each approaching step.
He stopped in front of her and held out his hand.

“May I have this dance?” Mike asked as the band started to play the next song.

Carrie couldn’t help but smile. She extended her own hand to meet Mike’s. “I’d love to dance.”

No more words were spoken as Mike led Carrie to the dance floor.

So you say your love’s about to end
Say you can’t take no more
She’s out the door
And you’re looking for a friend
Who am I to tell you why
I’m just curious
Were you furious
Or did you swallow your pride
And look her in the eye

Mike and Carrie’s bodies melded together as though they had always been united as one. Mike savored each
moment that Carrie was in his arms. In his mind, even though Carrie didn’t know of his feelings for her, this was pure
heaven. He knew that now was not the time to have a relationship with Carrie, but he also knew that someday it
would happen. So he kept his mind on the future while his heart lived for today.

Carrie smiled to herself. She had always felt safe in Mike’s arms, but it was only recently that she understood why.
And soon, Mike would know of her love for him. She only hoped that Mike felt the same way about her. Carrie lifted
her head from Mike’s shoulder and looked him in the eye. This was it.

And tell her that you love her
Tell her that you need her
Tell her that you want her to stay
Reassure her with a kiss
She may never know unless you
Show her what you’re feeling
Tell her you’re believing
Even though it’s hard to say
Cause she needs to know you’re thinking of her
So open up and tell her that you love her

Carrie brought her arms up around Mike’s neck as she continued to stare into his baby blues. Mike’s heart was
pounding with anticipation. How he longed to capture her lips with his. With one arm securely wrapped around
Carrie’s waist, he brought his other hand up to her face. Carrie closed her eyes at the feel of Mike’s fingers tracing
her jaw line. With her eyes still closed, Carrie raised her head and slightly opened her lips, inviting Mike to respond.
And he did. Mike couldn’t resist anymore. Even though he knew this wasn’t the time or place, his heart was going to
win the battle over his mind. Slowly, he brought his lips down to meet hers. At first impact, sparks flew. The kiss
started out gentle and soft, but soon grew in intensity.

Brother I’ve been right were you are now
My heart was broke
Cause I never spoke
Those healing words out loud
But I’ve learned my lesson well
And now every night before I close my eyes
I look at my woman and I ask myself

The rest of the world ceased to exist. Both Mike and Carrie were lost in each other’s lips, in the kiss, in their first kiss.
Neither could believe that this was actually happening, but both were driven to unexplainable excitement that it was
happening. Carrie’s head was reeling when Mike broke the kiss. His lips didn’t go far, though, as they quickly found
her neck. Carrie found it impossible to catch her breath. In a raspy, almost inaudible voice, she whispered in Mike’s
ear.

“I love you.”

Mike’s own head was clouded from the feel of her lips and skin on his. The smell of her perfume intoxicated him
beyond any amount of alcohol. Mike started to whisper in Carrie’s ear.

“Carrie…”

Carrie waited to hear him say that he, too, loved her. But instead of those three magical words, she was startled by a
sudden movement. Mike grabbed her shoulders and looked at her. He continued to stare at her as he tried
desperately to control his beating heart and his rapid breathing.

“Carrie, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have kissed you.”

Carrie stared back in disbelief. Had he not heard her confession of love?

“Mike, it’s okay. I wanted you to kiss me. I…I love you.”

Mike heard her words, but was not listening.

“No, Carrie, you don’t. You love Austin.”

Mike was too intent on trying to deny his feelings for Carrie that he didn’t see the hurt in her eyes. With tears
streaming down her cheeks, Carrie broke free of Mike’s grip and ran out of the building. Mike looked around the
dance floor, unsure of the events that had just taken place. He had just kissed his best friend, the woman that he
loves. She said she loved him, but it couldn’t be. Or could it? Wasn’t it reasonable to think that Carrie was still
thinking about Austin? But, what if she really is over Austin…what if she really does love me…oh, God, what
have I done…

Mike walked off the dance floor and sat down at the table with her wineglass. As he traced around the lip of the
glass, he finally understood what the words to the song had been trying to telling him.

And tell her that you love her
Tell her that you need her
Tell her that you want her to stay
Reassure her with a kiss
She may never know unless you
Show her what you’re feeling
Tell her you’re believing
Even though it’s hard to say
Cause she needs to know you’re thinking of her
So open up and tell her that you love her
Tell her that you love her

Mike knew what he had to do. He only hoped that it wasn’t too late.
