Waiting for You – Chapter 18b

Carrie sat forward – elbows on the table, chin in hands with her eyes watching the main entry to the ballroom. She had sat that way for nearly half an hour as the music, dancing couples and decibel of conversation had increased around her. The new year would be ushered in before the minute hand could complete another full circling of the clock’s face which hung from the wall with a spotlight trained on it so people could synchronize their watches for the exact moment 1943 would leave and 1944 would arrive. Mike had sat back and ordered coffee. He had gone through two refills as he sat in silence unsure what to do about Carrie’s change of mood. Unwilling to allow it to go on any longer, he sat forward until he could turn and see Carrie’s face in profile as he spoke.

“This isn’t exactly how I had expected us to spend the evening when I thought about tonight this past week.”

Carrie was so focused on the door she hadn’t heard Mike’s comment. The band’s rendition of another swing number had also somewhat drowned out his voice. He waited another minute for a reaction from Carrie before he decided to try getting her attention once more.

“Carrie, how about another dance? I hate sitting here not being out on the floor jitterbugging to all that good music. I mean, it is Tommy Dorsey.”

She turned her head slightly toward Mike though still watching the door at all times.

“What did you say about Tommy Dorsey, Mike?”

“Nothing…..nothing at all.”

Mike stared at her for a few moments and reached for his cup of coffee.

“That’s your third cup, Mike. When did you start drinking so much coffee?”

He looked up and surprisingly saw Carrie staring at him with concern.

“Just tonight…….to fill in the time until you come back to me.”

“What are you talking about? I’m right here – sitting next to you – the way I have all evening.”

“You might be sitting there but you’re hardly with me……………I’m sorry, Carrie, that was a mean thing to say……”

“No, Mike, I’m the one who’s sorry. You’re right. I’ve been ignoring you for awhile. I’m just concerned about….”

“Sami and Lucas, I know. Don’t you think I am, too, but sitting here trying to will them back into the ballroom by staring at the door isn’t going to work. If it did they would have been back in here a long time ago as long as you’ve been looking at that door. Do you want to talk about it? Maybe it would help us get past this limbo we seem to be in.”

Mike’s voice had taken on the soft, low, caring tone Carrie always loved when he wanted to set the mood for them to talk about something seriously. It conveyed his absolute, unconditional interest in what she had to say. It was hard to do in a cavernous room filled with a big band and hundreds of happy partygoers but he had reached her nonetheless.

“While I’ve been sitting here, I keep going over what might have happened that made Lucas change moods so suddenly. He’s not like that as a rule. I think I actually saw him turn pale. That’s why I wondered, as Sami did, if he was starting to suffer a relapse. It is chilly out tonight and
