GRANTS - The 2009 Cibola County Preliminary Cinderella Pageant was held March 21 at New Mexico State University-Grants.

The pageant is a scholarship program that encourages young women to build personal character and professional qualities.

Hopefuls competed in four age categories; Cinderella Tot, ages three to six; Cinderella Miniature Miss, ages seven to nine; Cinderella Miss, ages 10 to 12 and Cinderella Teen, ages 13 to 17.

The older Cinderellas, Miniature Miss, Miss and Teen participants were required to know the step-step-turn and the pretty feet modeling step patterns for the competition.

Throughout the year the new royalty will have many duties. They will make appearances at parties, fund raising events and perform at different functions. The overall winners are required to go to the state pageant.

Outgoing royalty assisted with the ceremonies, and in between category presentations they and a few of the contestants entertained the audience of family members and friends.

As the other contestants watched from backstage Victoria Sobieski, 2008 New Mexico Tot, sang A Bushel and a Peck from Guys and Dolls, Sienna Mascarenas, 2009 Cinderella Miniature Miss, performed a jazz dance and Presley Rhodus performed a dance to Smooth by Santana.

Later in the show, Mascarenas also performed a jazz dance to It's What's Inside That Counts, exemplifying the pageant's theme of personal development. Esperanza Perez, outgoing 2008 Cinderella Miniature Miss, sang Lo Mucho Que Te Quiero, and outgoing 2008 Cibola Cinderella Miss, Mariah Nicole Serna, recited the poem, This Foot Has.

Serna later thanked her parents, If it weren't for their help, I probably wouldn't have gone this far.

Perez said, I had a lot of fun with all my 'Cindi' sisters.

The Master of Ceremonies for the event was the Director of the Rio Rancho Cinderella Pageant, Claudia Rhodus, who assisted the Cibola County Cinderella Pageant Director, Nanci Mascarenas.

Outgoing 2008 Cibola Cinderella Teen Ashley Alyssa Fresquez made her final walk and thanked the audience for their support throughout the year.

I had so much fun this year, said Fresquez. One of the events she said she enjoyed was riding in a huge limousine in Las Vegas.

Judges for the pageant were from nearby communities. They were required to score the contestants and also make constructive notes that would later be shared with ongoing contestants to help them in their following pageants. Judges were Susan Montoya of Albuquerque, former pageant contestent who is now working for her Master of Business Administration; Jasmine Carter of Albuquerque, who aspires to appear on America's Next Top Model; Jaden Sobieski, Santa Fe Cinderella Pageant Director and 1996 Miss Petite New Mexico and Kathryn Marmon, Beacon staff writer.

Winning Cinderellas will go to the state finals June 10 -13 at the Sheraton Uptown Hotel in Albuquerque.
