I know this isn't the usual thing you see on this forum, but it is very near and dear to me. As I consider the highland games community an extended family, I thought some of you might be interested. Also everyone I have come in contact with through the games tends to be big hearted, and I'm looking for some help. I am participating in the Team in Training for El Tour de Tucson on Nov. 19, 2005,(El Tour is a 109 mile bike ride). That's right, a 285lbs highland games athlete riding a skinny road bike wearing spandex, but it's for a good cause, so I can suffer the laughs.
For those of you who don't know, Team in Training is part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. It takes ordinary people, and some not so ordinary, and helps them train for endurance sport. Century rides, marathon's, and triatholons. As a member you receive full coaching, sponsored rides, and the event that you sign up for. All that they ask in return is that you raise money to help support the society. The money that we raise goes directly for research for Leukemia & Lymphoma, and to help families that are battling these illnesses. Leukemia is the number one killing disease of children, and it will strike over 100,000 Americans alone this year. As a parent, like many of you, I can't imagine what it would be like to have to deal with this.
I personally am riding for a six year old by the name of Parker. He has been battling this disease since he was 3 years old, and unfortunately is back in the hospital again. Parker has spent over 400 days in the hospital over the course of the last 3 years. Needless to say this is a tremendous mental, and financial drain on his family. Without an organization like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society his parents may not have been able to be by his side during those painful and trying times. The money that has been raised over the years has led to amazing discoveries in the battle against Leukemia & Lymphoma, and has helped thousands of families like Parkers. Please, if you can see it in your hearts to donate, anything would be greatly appreciated. As a community the highland games athletes, judges, a.d's, and fans are some of the greatest people I've ever met. Anything you can give would be greatly appreciated, and of course for those in the U.S. it is 100% tax deductible. You can donate online at the website below. And no, that isn't a picture of me on the site.
Thanks in advance.
