I had a chance to attend the Miss US World Contest last night in Dallas. Erica Charlton, former Miss Texas contest, competed and looked stunning. All of the girls were very beautiful. They had make-up artists on hand, hair stylists, etc. This pageant is all about beauty and glamour. I found out last year's winner had gotten her GED and had never gone to college so it wasn't about education or a platform. I also found out through the grapevine about the pageant by talking with some at our table the load down on the pageant. There were 50 girls who entered and they selected top ten from resumes, 5 photographs, and phone interviews. Then two were picked for sponsor award and internet voting award. The girls were flown to Dallas at American Airlines expense, cocktail gowns were provided as well as their evening gowns (which were not evening gowns by Miss Texas standards at all), swimsuits, etc. On Friday they all went to Southfork for swimsuit competition, a tradition in Miss World is to model barefoot by water. Anna Hanks, Top 10 Miss USA in 2003, was winner and also received second runner-up. Kirsten Berset , Top 10 Miss USA this year, was first runner up. The winner was stunning but needs to work on her swimsuit appearance (as I saw on the big screen at the contest--they showed clips-lots of cellulite). They also had personality competition at the State Fair one day. The pageant was a first for the two CEO's and it showed. It was very disorganized and long. It was supposed to get started at 7 and didn't until two hours later. It was in a ball room with tables and the audience ate.The audience was so loud sometimes we couldn't even here the mc. Tickets were $150 a piece.
The girls got to keep their evening gown, cocktal dresses, jewelry , shoes, swimsuits, etc. After the top five were chosen (all tall and skinny girls except one who was 5'6") they had one interview question which was very simple. It was sort of a hokey pageant but probably because it was their first year. I am sure they will improve. Troy McLain from The Apprentice was the m.c.
The entire night made me really appreciate the Miss Texas/Miss America system. A documentary of the pageant will be shown in November, I think, before the Miss World pageant in Dec.
