Fat Types and Their Importance for Good or Bad Health

By Knut Holt

The different fat types and their health effects:

High consumption of fat or of the combination fat and carbohydrates causes obesity, heart disease and other health problems.

However the different types of fat have very different effects on the health. Here is a survey of the different fat categories and their effects:

Mono-unsaturated fat - This type of fat prevents heart disease and circulatory disease in moderate amounts.

Omega-6-poly-unsaturated fat - This fat type prevents heart disease if you do not consume too much of it. However it causes inflammatory

reactions. This type of reactions are benign when they are moderate and when they are provoked to fight disease. But a constant high

inflammatory response is dangerous, and can cause rheumatism, heart trouble and cancer. A very high consumption of this type of fat is therefore

Omega-3-poly-unsaturated fat - This type of fat prevents heart disease and reduces inflammatory reactions in moderate amounts. Therefore it

also reduces the risk of cancer, intestinal inflammations and rheumatism.

Omega-9-poly-unsaturated fat - This type of fat also prevents heart disease and reduces inflammatory reactions in moderate amounts. Therefore

it reduces the risk of cancer, intestinal inflammations and rheumatism.

Saturated fat - This type of fat is probably not dangerous in small amounts. In higher amounts, saturated fat gives high cholesterol levels, causes

clogging of the blood vessels, cause coronary heart disease and increases the risk of infarction of the heart and other organs.

Cholesterol- Cholesterol is a fat-like compound found in the food, but also synthesized from saturated fat by the body. High intake of saturated fat

or of cholesterol itself, therefore elevates the cholesterol level in the body. Cholesterol is a necessary compound, but in higher amounts it causes

clogging of the blood vessels, causes coronary heart disease and increases the risk of infarction of the heart and other organs.

Trans-fat - This type of fat is chemically altered by processing to yield specific mechanical properties. Margarine often contains this type of fat.

This type of fat is dangerous, and is a probably a causal component for heart disease and cancer. There is however one exception: Some amount

of fat containing the trans acid conjugated linoleic acid seem to be benevolent for the skin health and may help reduce weight. Conjugated linoleic

acid is found in milk and butter.

Common problems of the average diet:

The average American and European diet generally contains too much fat and carbohydrates combined. The fat consumed is generally a mixture

of trans fat, saturated fat and omega-6-poly-unsaturated fat. This fat misconsume causes overweight and is probably a major contributing

component for the incidence of heart disease, cancer, intestinal inflammatory diseases, rheumatism and other inflammatory conditions.

Recommended amount of fat in the diet:

A common advice is to let 25-30 % of the energy needed be covered by fat, and the rest by carbohydrates. However, experts do not agree at his

point. Some recommend a low carbohydrate diet with more fat, and others recommend a high carbohydrate diet with a low fat amount.

In either case, the combined intake of fat and carbohydrates should not be much higher than your daily energy consumption if you have a normal

or wanted weight. If you want to loose weight, this combined amount must be lower. If you want to gain weight, it should be higher.

The right mixture of fat types:

The right mixture of different fat types is as important as the amount of fat in the diet to keep good health. However, you must not take the

percent ratios given here too literally, since there is much unagreement about the exact ratios that should be recommended. Furthermore, if you

have an active lifestyle that demands much energy, this is best achieved by increasing the amount of carbohydrates and mono-unsaturated fat.

Mono-unsaturated fat - Ideally as much as 35% of the fat consumption should be from this type of fat. You can find this fat in olive oil, raps oil and

walnut oil.

Omega-6-poly-unsaturated fat - 30 % of the fat consumption should be from this fat type. You find it in soya oil and corn oil.

Omega-3-poly-unsaturated fat and omega-9-poly-unsaturated fat - 20 % of the fat consumption should be this type. You find it in fish oil and in

fat fish. If you suffer from inflammatory conditions like rheumatism and intestinal inflammation, you will probably benefit from increasing the

amount of this fat type, and reduce the amount of other fat types.

Saturated fat - Not more than 15 % of the fat consumption should be saturated fat. Saturated fat is found in fat from mammals, coconut fat and in

Cholesterol - The cholesterol level in the body depends upon the combined amount of consumed cholesterol itself and saturated fat. To keep the

cholesterol level right, you should not consume too much saturated fat, and not very much of food containing cholesterol, like eggs and spawn.

Trans-fat - This type of fat should ideally not be a part of the diet at all. Margarine, cookies, snacks and often also bread contain this type of fat. It

is therefore important to reduce the consume of margarine, cookies, snacks, and to check the composition of the bread you consume.

Conjugated linoleic acid - This is perhaps the only trans fat acid that is benevolent in some amount. It is found in natural milk fat, and you can buy

dietary supplements of this substance. A small amount of this substance may help keep your skin healthy and may help you to reduce weight.

Erection Problems and Possible Treatments

Problems of achieving a satisfactory erection are fairly common. If the problem does not originate from lack of lust and is great enough to make

normal intercourse impossible, the condition is called erectile dysfunction (impotence). Erection problems are caused by combined physical and

psychological factors.

The penis has three bodies containing a dense network of blood vessels along all its length. During erection blood is filled into the vessels of these

bodies. The bodies then engorge, make the penis hard and rise it up. The filling of these bodies occur when the vessels leading blood to the penis

relax and vessels draining the penis constrict their volume.

Before and during erection nerves lead impulses to the genitals. The nerve ends in this area then releases the substance nitrogen oxide. Nitrogen

oxide will diffuse through the genital area and the penis and stimulate the reaction of the blood vessels in the penis.

Erection problems can occur because of disorders in the nervous system sending impulses to the genital area, problems with the blood supply to

the penis and anatomical problems in the penis or genital area. Specific causes can be:

- Accidents, stroke, surgery or tumours hurting brain areas or areas in the spinal cord responsible for erection impulses.

- Multiple sclerosis, a disease hurting the isolating sheets around the neural fibres in the brain and spinal cord, can give erection problems.

- Accidents or diseases hurting nerves from the spinal cord to the genital region.

- Atherosclerosis caused by age or an unhealthy lifestyle, giving narrowing and hardening of blood vessels to the genital region.

- Injury to the erectile bodies caused by inflammation, accidents or diseases.

- Congenital malformations in the penis or genital region, for example hypospadias and epispadias.

- Peyronie's disease, a common inflammatory disease causing abnormal bending or twisting of the penis, and sometimes also hinder the filling of

blood into the erectile bodies, sometimes gives problems for the erections.

- Circumcision causing the penile skin to be too tight, or causing extensive inelastic scars.

- Side effects of medicines, such as medications taken for high blood pressure or depression.

- Zinc deficiency.

- Heart disease.

- Diabetes causing injury to the nerves and blood vessels to the penis.

- High blood pressure (hypertension).

- Liver or kidney disease.

- Alcohol or drug abuse impairing psychological and neural functions.

Psychological causes can interfere with the erection process by distracting a man from stimuli that normally would give him sexual arousal.

Psychological issues account for about 40% of erection problems. Erection problems in men under age 50 are most likely to be caused by

psychological factors. Psychological causes of erection problems include:

- Anxiety for not being able to perform sexually as well as the partner demands.

- Prolonged emotional upset, such as worrying, anxiety or anger due to a man's economical, professional or social situation.

- Relationship problems, for example when the woman has different preferences of sexual practice than the man.

- A man who loses sexual desire for his partner may develop erection problems.

- Recently widowed men can get erection problems.

- Some men have difficulty having sexual intercourse with their partner after she has given birth because he does not like the changes that the

birth process has caused to the woman's body.

When a specific organic and psychological condition causes problems for the erections, this problem should be treated with appropriate methods

that will vary according to the actual disease.

If the cause is heart disease or atherosclerosis, lifestyle changes and training adapted to the medical situation can often improve the general

health situation and improve the erectile abilities.

If the cause of the erection problems is a problematic penile shape, for example curved or twisted penis by Peyronie's disease, using a mechanical

penis reaction device for some time may help.

On the marked you can also find herbal products to treat injured or diseased blood vessels in the genital area. These products typically contain

herbal elements that experience has proven to stimulate tissue repair in blood vessels.

It is not always possible to cure the condition causing erectile problems. Still the problems can be overcome by medication that stimulates the

vessels leading blood to the penis to relax and the vessels draining the penis to constrict. These drugs typically achieve this task by stimulating

the release of nitrogen oxide in the genital area or by mimicing nitrogen oxide.

Viagra and Cialis are the best known pharmacological treatment for erection problems. In spite of what people often think, these drugs do not

increase the sexual drive. If the sexual excitement is there, Viagra can help to achieve erection, if the drive and excitement lack in the first place,

Viagra will not help.

There are also herbal products on the market that stimulate the erection mechanism. Erection oils give an instant erection response, but the

response only last 2-3 hours. Erection or potency pills take a longer time to give effect, but the effect lasts for many hours. The herbal product will

often contain components that increase the sexual excitement in addition to improving the pure erection mechanism.

If it is not possible at all to achieve erection with any treatment, surgical implants can help to make the penis stiff and raised up enough to

perform an intercourse. One type of implant is partly rigid bodies that make the penis permanently partially erected. Another type of implant is

inflatable bodies that can make the penis fully erected when the need rises.

How Does Erection of the Penis Take Place

Erection takes place when structures inside the penis and along the urethra between a man's legs are filled with blood and inflated. This occur

upon signals from the brain and the spinal cord, and the signals are transmitted through nerves in the parasympatic nervous system, a part of the

autonomous or involuntary nervous system.

The erection is triggered and controlled by the following events:

- Something stimulates sensorial bodies in the genital zone or other senses. Impulses are then sent from the senses through nerves and the

spinal cord towards the brain, and reaches the upper areas of the brain. The brain then recognizes these impulses as something sexually

arousing. Also thoughts originating in the brain itself may be recognized as something sexually arousing.

- The higher brain areas having recognized some arousing events then send impulses down to the limbic system at the lower area of the brain. It

is the limbic system that actually produces the feeling of excitement.

- The limbic system sends signals down the spinal cord and out to the genital area through nerves called nervi erigentes - a part of the

parasympatic nervous system

- The signals reaching the penis and the rest of the genital zone then trigger erection and engorgement of the area between the man's legs.

- Stimuli to the penile or genital sensorial bodies do not need to reach the brain to result in an erection. Areas in the spinal cord will also

recognize the stimuli and get excited. Then the spinal cord also by its own sends erectile impulses back to the genital area.

- The sensorial bodies in the genital area will also be stimulated mechanically by the erection. Since stimulation of these bodies trigger erection,

the erection process is self enforcing. A beginning erection thus trigger even more erection.

In the penis lie three bodies consisting of a network of very elastic blood vessels having circular smooth muscles in their walls, called erectile

bodies. There are two paired bodies lying at the upper side of the urethra (corpora cavernosa), and one lying around the urethra (corpus

The muscles in the vessel walls are able to constrict the volume of the vessels, or relax allowing the vessels to widen. Vessels leading blood to or

from the erectile bodies also have the ability to constrict or relax in order to restrict or facilitate blood flow. The erectile chambers are not only

confined to the penis, but continue in the area between the legs all the way backwards to the anal area.

The erection response consists of the following events in the genital zone:

- When the signals from the brain and the spinal cord reach the nerve ends in the penis and the genital zone, the chemical compound nitric oxide

(NO) is released.

- Nitric oxide then spreads through the genital area and especially the penis. Nitric oxide then triggers the following reactions.

- Blood vessels leading blood to the erectile bodies relax. Then more blood flows into the penis.

- Blood vessels leading from the erectile bodies constrict, making it difficult for blood to leave the bodies.

- The smooth muscles around the vessels in the erectile bodies relax, allowing these vessels to widen.

- The blood going into the erectile bodies will then fill up in the vessels of the bodies and inflate the bodies to a much larger volume.

- The inflated bodies will get straight and hard. The growing erectile bodies will inflate the whole penis and make the penis rise.

- Since the erectile bodies continues backwards between the man's legs, also this area swells and fixes the penis rigidly so that it does not sway

from side to side when fully erected.

The Energy and Climate Problems of the World - How to Solve Them?

By Knut Holt

The world has an energy problem. The supply of the main source of energy, the oil, is gradually running out. The use of oil, coal and other fossil

energy sources is polluting the planet with greenhouse gasses that are capturing heat from the sun rays in a dangerous degree.

But also most alternative energy sources give problems for the environment. Some of them take up vast areas of land, like bio-fuel production,

extensive solar cell plants and wind mills. Extensive use of croplands to produce bio-diesel, methanol, ethanol or other bio-fuels can cause a

chronic hunger catastrophe. Others, like nuclear power stations can accidentally destroy the environment of vast areas and potentially kill millions

of people. Also leakage from deposits of nuclear waste can give the same effect. But nuclear power is very clean if everything goes well.

As it seems, there is no easy or elegant political or technical solution to the problem. The problem must be challenged with a clever combination

of several means.

An important module in the solution is energy economization. Where it is possible one must use engines, technology and logistics that utilize the

energy as effectively as possible. One must also stop using energy on activities that do not result in any added comfort, do not give gain of any

sort, or give only marginal resulted value. By using the energy sources more effectively, the World's energy need will perhaps drop by so much as

Then the use of oil and coal must be replaced with all kinds of alternative energy sources, but no alternative must be used in such an extend or

such a way that it cause new problems.

One part of the solution is using bio diesel or other bio-fuels made of waste from croplands. In the process of converting the waste to fuel, the

content of minerals in the waste can probably also be extracted and sold as fertilizers. But it is unethical to grow crop just for making bio-fuel,

since that can cause food shortage and rise of food prizes.

Use of solar energy to make electricity will be a great part of the solution. Theoretically every roof and outer wall in the world can be covered by

solar cell panels, even though it will not be estheticly or practically possible to go so far. Wastelands that have little other value can also be used

to mount large solar cell plants. There is however a limit on how much solar cell panels you can mount before the environment is disturbed.

Much more electricity can be produced by wind-mills than today, but there is a limit on the number and extent of wild-mill parks you can set up

before the environment is heavily disturbed. In areas like Denmark and Northern Germany the disturbing effects can already be seen clearly.

In many areas the waves in the sea or the stream of tide water can be used to produce electricity in a commercially economical fashion, but again

there is a limit on how far you can go in building wave or tidal power plants before you destroy the environment.

The wind can also be used more directly, as it were in former periods. Sails can be mounted on large ships, especially on large cargo carriers.

However, the sail rigs will probably look quite differently than those of the old vessels, and be operated automatically by computers.

Many countries have special natural energy resources that lend themselves to easily exploitation. Geothermal energy is one of these. Iceland is

extensively using geothermal heat directly or to produce electricity. This technology can probably be extended for use in areas where the

geothermal heat is somewhat more hidden, but still relative close to the surface.

Heat pumps are installations using a reversed refrigerator technology to carry heat from the outside environment to the inside of a building where

it is concentrated to a higher temperature. The heat can then be used for warming the building or other applications. Heat pumps need some

electricity to work, but extract more energy from the outside that they consume. More extensive use of heat pumps can give a great amount of

the energy needed for heating,.Heat pumps can also be used to fetch geothermal energy of low temperature and concentrate it to a higher

temperature without digging very deep.

Hydroelectric power plants using the natural fall of water from high to low areas have long been a major source of electric energy, and many of

the existing plants can be made more efficient. To some extend new plants can also be built, but there is a limit also on this technology before the

impact on the environment gets too heavy.

Unfortunately it is not possible to avoid using more nuclear power than today if the energy crisis shall be solved. There are however new

developments in this area that makes nuclear power less dangerous. Scientists are right now developing a new type of reactors that will use

thorium as a fuel and that will be work subcritically. The reactions in these reactors cannot go out of control. The waste also will cease to radiate

after some hundred years, and not many thousand, so the storing of waste will be less problematic. But still there will be waste that must be

handled safely.

Most alternative energy sources produce electricity, but it is not always practical to use the electricity directly. It is however possible to use the

electricity to produce hydrogen, and the hydrogen can then be used as a clean fuel in applications where electricity does not fit.

In the long run, use of fusion power will probably be the permanent solution. But commercial fusion plant will probably still not be available in the

next forty years. There is however a joker that might show up to be salvage of the world's energy problem, namely cold fusion. This seems to be a

real phenomenon, and not a misunderstanding as many thought and still thinks. But one does still not know if this phenomenon can be used

practically to produce useful energy.
