Summit Publications and the editors of Hi! magazine have yet to receive any form of communication or complaint from the lawyers of Claudine Barretto regarding their alleged intrusion on the actress’ privacy.
This was confirmed after Manila Bulletin made an inquiry to lawyer Raymund Fortun, counsel for Claudine Barretto, about the nature of the legal action that they plan to file against Summit and editors Ces Evangelista and Joann Maglipon.
Fortun said "I haven’t gotten all pieces of evidence yet so I don’t know what action it will be. It will definitely include, as cause of action, past publications made under Joann Maglipon’s direction."
The issue stemmed over the alleged unofficial publication on Hi! magazine by editor Ces Evangelista of the offering ceremonies of the actress’ daughter Sabina Barretto. Offering in the Victory Christian Fellowship (VCF) church is like a Christening in the Catholic faith. Claudine and her boyfriend Raymart Santiago attend VCF.
When asked what were these past publications Fortun was referring to, the lawyer refused to give details.
Fortun, categorically denying Claudine’s actions were spurned by a personal grudge, said, "Claudine’s course of action is based on a series of acts or write-ups which violate her rights. Let me say that Claudine needs to do this as a form of self-protection."
When asked who will be named respondents to the case, Fortun said, "I have to keep mum on specifics so as not to telegraph her moves."
Joann Maglipon, when contacted for her reaction about the issue, told Bulletin, "I am preparing my statement right now. I am meeting with my lawyer tonight. Since there was already a lawyer coming out on TV talking about it, I figured I should consult with a lawyer first before making my statement public."
Evangelista for his part, said, "we have yet to hear from the camp of Claudine. Her lawyers have not written nor called us about it. Everything about that alleged legal action, we just heard from the media."
Evangelista said he got the story from one of the child’s godfathers. "May kasama siyang kaibigan na mahilig mag-take ng pictures as a hobby. They offered me the photos and I didn’t see any reason why I shouldn’t put it out. And besides, nakita ko na lumabas yun sa Inquirer, sa column ni Tim Yap. Hindi ko alam na may kinalaman pala kay Joann (Maglipon, editor-in-chief of Yes! and Hi!, ed.) ang lahat," he said.
Evangelista continued, "it was published in good faith. To me, the occasion when a child was being offered to the Lord, constitutes good news. The title said it all, "Pag-aalay sa Panginoon."
Evangelista also said, "Claudine should count her blessings more than anything. She just won two best actress awards and soon, she’ll be marrying a fine, young man in the person of Raymart. These are a cause for celebration. She shouldn’t be bothered by little things like this anymore," he said.
