Alleged Piolo sex video sparks an
all-new battle of the networks
By Tessa C. Mauricio / Friday, April 08, 2005

THE actor Piolo Pascual’s management team, ABS- CBN Star Magic, has sought the support of the Professional Artist Managers Inc. (PAMI) “in

acting against (the) GMA 7 (program) Startalk,” for “blatantly naming (the artist) as one of the males” in an alleged homosexual sex video. The show-biz talkshow aired a segment on the now controversial issue on April 2.

In a letter to PAMI president June Torrejon-Rufino (dated April 4), Star Magic senior vice president Juan L. Manahan claimed, “Although they gave Mr. Pascual the benefit of the doubt by saying that there is no certainty that he is the one in the video, serious damage has been done because Startalk made very grave insinuations.

“Mr. Pascual is definite that he is NOT in the said video or any video for that matter. We have reviewed the alleged video and we are certain that the person they are pointing at is NOT Mr. Piolo Pascual.”

Manahan acknowledged PAMI’s campaign against unethical journalism, having initiated a dialogue between ABS-CBN 2 and GMA 7 executives in February, wherein the two networks agreed not to sacrifice responsible reportage for the sake of producing show-biz scoops.

“We are aware and are in full support of your campaign…and we shall not allow any program or entity to continue with such practice,” added Manahan in the said letter. “We deem it is very unacceptable and irresponsible for a network to condone such malicious practice. Please be informed that we are also in the process of studying our legal options regarding the matter.”

As of press time, PAMI has yet to give Star Magic a reply, whether the organization will or will not rally behind the ABS-CBN complaint. The latest advisory from the network is that Manahan had also written Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) chairman Ma. Consoliza P. Laguardia, “seeking the assistance of (your) good office in acting against GMA7, Startalk in particular.”

In response to the brewing dispute, Jayce Perlas of GMA 7’s program issued a statement to the Life & Times, which said: “Startalk aired the story on the sex video allegedly involving Piolo Pascual, a prominent showbiz personality. The program did not make any conclusion that indeed it was Piolo Pascual in the video in question.

“The angle of the Startalk segment was the proliferation of alleged ‘sex videos’ counting Ethel Booba, Jennylyn Mercado, Paolo Bediones et. al. and lately, Piolo Pascual as its victims.

“For the record, Startalk maintains responsible show-biz reporting.”
