M2K Music: Home to the famous
We’ve heard of artist management agencies, but a song management agency? That’s what M2K Music Licensing Corporation is all about. Not a record label or a music publishing house as it’s often mistaken to be, M2K Music is the only song management agency operating in the Philippines today, administering the licenses of hit songs by the likes of Odette Quesada, Bodjie Dasig, Alvina Sy, Jungee Marcelo, Arnold Reyes, Gino Cruz, Nori Villena, Markel Luna, Rene Novelles, Tito Cayamanda, Edwin Marollano, Lisa Diy, Chat Zamora, Dhel Horest, Romeo Dongeto, Barney Borja, Bernadette Guttierez, Larry Hermoso, Snaffu Rigor, Jimmy Borja, Arnie Mendaros, Jonathan Florido, Marizen Yaneza, Rommel Guevara, Jingle Buena, Freddie Saturno and Christine Bendebel, as well as those by performing songwriters like Gary Granada, Bayang Barrios, Mike Villegas, Father & Sons, Noel Cabangon, Vincent Borromeo, Rica Arambulo, Kala and Isha.
You may not know these names very well but you probably know their songs. Consider Quesada, the enormously talented and prolific creator of hits like "Growing Up," "Don’t Know What To Do, Don’t Know What To Say," "Give Me A Chance," "Farewell," "A Long Long Time Ago" and "Til I Met You," recently reinvented by pop diva Regine Velasquez. Or perhaps Freddie Saturno, who wrote songs interpreted by Lani Misalucha and Jaya.
How about the anthemic "Tagumpay Nating Lahat" – actually a masterpiece by Gary Granada? Or you may perhaps recognize Rico Soliman from his group Father and Sons, and their monster hit "Miss na Miss Kita." Or Snaffu Rigor’s "Bulag, Pipi at Bingi," interpreted to perfection by Florante? Or Martin Nievera’s "Pain," a heartbreak tune floating in a surprisingly bouncy groove written by Alvina Sy. These songs have already entered local pop music lore and have stood the test of time, still eliciting interest from artists and audiences many decades after they were created.
Established in 2004, M2K Music Licensing Corporation has since grown by leaps and bounds to become a successful and influential company dedicated to licensing the best of these great Pinoy pop songs to music users here and abroad. It takes care of these songs by marketing and promoting them for record labels, film producers and content providers to use. Great songs, if handled the right way, can make good money, and when songs make money, songwriters are happy, or should be.
M2K is big on the word "should." Its business ethic is based on integrity and absolute transparency. Royalties from various usages are reported to the songwriter in excruciating detail. More importantly, the company is managed by a veteran songwriter herself, Christine Bendebel ("Urong Sulong," "Kung Maibabalik Ko Lang"), who has been part of the local music industry since she started writing songs professionally at 20.
To celebrate decades of famous Filipino songs by anonymous songwriters, M2K will produce "Nina: Gold," a series of concerts in November and December at the Music Museum. "Nina: Gold" will feature the sultry pop diva singing hit songs by M2K Songwriters. A first for M2K as well as Nina herself, who sings an all–original, all–Filipino music repertoire in concert for the first time in her career, "Nina: Gold" promises to be worth its weight in pop and songwriters’ gold.
