The tax court ordered the Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Department of Justice to answer within 10 days the motion filed by Bonifacio Alentajan, Santos’ legal counsel. The actress was also given the same period to respond to the prosecution’s reply. One of the contract stars of the ABS-CBN television network, Santos posted a bail of P20,000 on Monday for her temporary freedom. Alentajan said the justice department was hasty in filing a case against her client. “They [the DOJ] kept telling us that there is still an investigation. But why file the case if it is still being investigated?” Alentajan asked. Santos is accused of filing a false income-tax return for 2002, declaring a gross income of P8.033 million instead of P16.396 million, the BIR said. The justice department said this discrepancy led to back-income taxes totaling P2.714, 617.18, including penalties and interest. Santos is among the celebrities the justice office charged with tax evasion. The others are the movie star Richard Gomez, talent manager Douglas Quijano, plastic surgeon Joel Mendez and herbalist Renato Herrera.
