FPJ, 5 others named national artists
Six Filipino artists, including the late actor and presidential
candidate Fernando Poe Jr., will be conferred the rank and title of
national artist in ceremonies scheduled June 9, Malacaņang announced
yesterday.
Aside from Poe Jr. who distinguished himself in film, also named as
national artists were Bienvenido L. Lumbera for literature, Ramon A.
Obusan for dance, Benedicto R. Cabrera for visual arts, Ildefonso P.
Santos Jr. for architecture, and the late Ramon Valera for fashion
design.
The six awardees were recommended to President Arroyo by the Joint
Boards of the Commissioners of the National Commission for Culture
and the Arts and the Trustees of the Cultural Center of the
Philippines in conformity with their prescribed rules and processes.
The President, who gave her confirmation last March 30, will lead
the conferment ceremonies in Malacaņang. It will be followed by a
tribute to the honorees to be given at the Main Theater of the
Cultural Center of the Philippines.
The conferment ceremonies are traditionally held in anticipation of
the anniversary of Philippine independence on June 12. (Anthony

But for some reason I was expecting it to be a male
artist. hehe.
