Ai Ai in a Showdown with Regine
by Mario Bautista
Ai Ai delas Alas turns 41 on November 11. "If life begins at 40, then 1
year old pa lang ako," she quips.
How will she celebrate her birthday? "I'm working. Guest ako ni Regine
Velasquez sa 'Reflections' concert niya sa Aliw Theater pati sa November
12, 18, 19, December 9 and 10. To show my love for her, I'll sing solo one
of her hits, 'I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing,' then magdu-duet kami sa 'On the
Wings of Love' na ako ang nasa harness. Bahala na ang audience mag-decide
kung sino ang mas rerespetuhin sa amin. Basta ako, kinakanta ko 'yun nang
nakapikit pa 'ko, wala lang."
She's very fond of Regine. "Madaling pakiusapan. When I asked her to guest
in my concert, hindi nagpabayad. Friend ko 'yan eh. For her concert,

year. Concert
tour nila. Almost two months mag-iikot sina Ogie at Regine sa U.S..
Katrina Halili, Kuhdet Honasan, Ana Leah Javier at Rodel Velayo.

Ai Ai: Everything Started with a Dream
by Boy Abunda
As one of the country’s top comediennes on T.V. and in the movies (her Ang
Tanging Ina is still the local top-grossing film of all time), Ai Ai de las
Alas has no qualms about playing different characters.
But when Regine Velasquez asked her to guest in her forthcoming concert
series, Reflections, where she would play an older version of Regine, Ai Ai
thought the idea was so hilarious that she started laughing and wouldn’t
stop. "May story kasi ang show. Ipapakita nila ang Regine na past (to be
portrayed by 14-year-old Kim Flores), present, and future. Ako yung future.
Ang papel ko, ako si Regine – after 20 years. Ganda, 'di ba? Iba ito, diva!
Class-class-an! At ingles kung ingles!"
But behind all the jokes, Ai Ai was having second thoughts. Not because she
didn’t want to do it, but because she wasn’t sure she could. Although she
started out in showbiz as a sing-along master – and despite having released
three albums, Ai Ai has never really thought of herself as a singer. In
fact, her singing career has been a major source of frustration for her.
"Hay naku, tinanggap ko na talaga na hindi ako singer dahil hindi sumikat
ang album ko," she laughs.
But don’t count Ai Ai out yet. Aside from performing in Regine’s concert
(which opened last Nov. 4 and will continue to run Fridays and Saturdays of
November and on Dec. 9 and 10 at the Aliw Theater), she has plans of
recording a live album. But trust Ai Ai to turn this into something other
than a serious recording effort. She plans to compile tracks of her singing
hits by Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and other divas during
her live performances, ‘piyok’ and all. "Kahit di ko abot ang nota, okay
lang. Kung pumiyok, sige pa rin. Basta, kasama na lahat-lahat ‘yon, para
kakaiba. Ang title, The Belter – Live."
She’ll surely get a lot of practice when she guests in Regine’s concert,
since she’s slated to perform two belter-worthy songs Regine popularized,
namely On the Wings of Love, originally by Jeffrey Osborne, and I Don’t
Wanna Miss a Thing by Aerosmith. Ai Ai is even planning to go so far as to
try the same gimmick Regine did during her R2K concert, where she sang On
the Wings of Love while suspended from a harness in mid-air. "I’m freakin’
Regine!" laughs Ai-Ai.
Seriously, the only reason Ai Ai agreed to do the show is because it was
Regine who asked her. The two of them actually go back a long way, although
it was usually Regine who guested in Ai Ai’s shows, like her birthday
concert, Seduct Me in November 1999. For that show, which was held at the
Folk Arts Theater, Regine only agreed to be given an honorarium, an amount
far below what an artist of her stature deserved. But, Regine wouldn’t have
it any other way.
"Never namin pinag-usapan ang pera," says Ai Ai. "Ganyan kasi si Regine,
ayaw niyang tumanggap ng bayad. Kaya ngayon, ako naman ang mag-gue-guest sa
show niya. I’m just returning the favor. At gagawin ko for the love of
Regine."
For Ai Ai, Regine is more than just a colleague in the business. She’s a
friend. That’s why when Regine asked her to do this, Ai Ai didn’t even have
to think twice. "Idol ko siya dahil magaling siyang kumanta. Hanga ako sa
galing niyang mag-belt.

mmJun says:
If Ai-Ai is really a friend she would do what she can
to stop her manager from trying to undermine Regine's
career and personal life.
Makes sense, Regine fans?
