Subject: In memory

Dedicated to my beloved granny, Edith Theresa Nuaria (nee Kerediredi):
Who passed away on the 5th of May 1999 at age 85.

I have loved and loved
but my loving has not deterred you
from leaving me dry.
I have listened, some,
but my attention was not helpful
in keeping you here.
I have sulked at your scoldings
and turned up my nose at your advice
and yet these have not kept you from staying back to scold me some more.
I have cried when I happened to see you still after my times away
Cried with happiness that you were still here
And whole through those times, I would spend by your side, searching your bilum for a left over squashed beda
or walking with you down to the river for a relaxing swim.
Your scent was with me when scrubbing your back, the feel of your clothes against my fingers when doing your laundry.
Your harmonious tunes ringing in my ears on a Sunday and your prayers every morning and evenings were a comfort.
Then there was your laughter, a laughter of a young girl, a girl in love with life.

I miss you my darling bubui!
May you rest in heavenly bliss till we meet someday soon.

I remain,
Your granddaughter.

beda = betelnut
bubui = granny
