Literal interpretation of the bible, especially the Old Testament and particularly by the most pious, is sheer insanity. It draws its value system from the bronze age where life was cheap. There were only two main forms of punishment - beatings or death. For gathering wood on the Sabbath - death, for adultery - death, etc, etc.

When Moses came down from the mountain with the word of God fresh in his mind, thou shalt not kill, he ordered the slaughter of thousands for sheer misbehavior. As we were horrified that King Herod ordered the deaths of all first born why were we not horrified that God himself did the same - murdering innocent children of Egypt to force the hand of the Pharaoh? Ghandi freed his people with peaceful resistace. Was Ghandi kinder and wiser than God or was this part of the Bible just legend?

The covenant with God licensed the Hebrews to invade Canaan, slaughter all men women and children there and steal their possessions - if they would worship only him. Have you even considered this before writing “A literally translated Bible teaches universal salvation?” The "God" of the Old Testament is a god of war - and he discriminates.

The majority of the Ten Commandments are timeless codes that create an orderly society. However, the Ten Commandments themselves condone slavery and Levitican Law contains laws on their treatment.

I could go on and on but the fact is that we can not take these books as infalable laws of God as they were crafted by the hand of man - and man's moral code has changed from the Old to New Testaments. Did God become more moral over time?

I do not blame Jesus (Yeshua) for what Christianity has become. He was a dissenter, known as a heretic to the established commercial religion of the day and Caiphus was a wealthy and worldly Biny Hinn of his day. What would Pat Robertson say if Jesus returned and criticized this Roman religion that trades unashamedly on his name.

What really is driving people away from Christianity? It is the stressing of the nonsensical or implausible over the real substance in the message of Jesus. There would have been no Crusade or inquisition had Jesus been there and a real God would have used his power to stop wars, not pick a favorite and aid in the slaughter.

Wake up and become a real Christian – i.e., one who follows the teachings of Christ!
