Interests: My interests are in social and charity work to aid those less fortunate than me. I enjoy singing and listening to gospel music, reading, watching movies, cooking, dancing and outdoor sports. Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why? My best friend, Victor. He introduced me to an intimate relationship with God. He helped me see the potential in myself through the books he had me read and his motivational speeches. What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you (aside from winning your title) and/or what is the most interesting thing about you? The most interesting thing that has happened to me is the realization that the helping hand I've been looking for is right at the end of my arm and that my small contributions to the people around me is God's way of answering their prayers. The most interesting thing about me is that I believe the highest peak of my past achievements is the worst of my future because to me the sky is not the limit. It is the starting point. What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal? I'm the CEO of my own company called Fineway Communications, specializing in PR and Events Management of Glamour and Glitz. Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like. I was born and raised in a small quiet town called Kabwe which is a 1 1/2 hour drive from the capital city. Being the only girl in a family of six was a challenge and still is but our family remains supportive of one another and keeps us united and alive. List any interesting or unsual jobs you may have had. Miss Zambia 2003 What is your most unusual talent? Spotting people who are in need of a listening ear without them saying anything. I exhibit an excellent listening ear and believe this is my gift to other people. |

Author: Miss Africa joins the Lesson for Life [Edit] |
Date Posted: 14:38:13 03/27/05 Sun Miss Africa joins the Lesson for Life Fifty children including orphans with disabilities participated in the celebrations marking the Lesson for Life that involved 100,000 children in Zambia on World AIDS Day. Miss Africa and Zambia, Cynthia Kanema, as well as the Deputy Minister also participated. Fifty children including orphans with disabilities participated in a celebration marking the Lesson for Life that involved 100,000 children in Zambia on World AIDS Day. Miss Zambia, Cynthia Kanema recently crowned, as Miss Africa International was the celebrity at the event with the Guest of honor being the Deputy Minister in the Office of the Vice President, Mrs. Rose Banda. The children presented poems, drama and took part in a Lesson for Life exercise, which involved writing Good News letters on their vision of an AIDS-free country. The event was covered by three national dailies and a television crew. In Zambia, the Lesson for Life has drawn thousands of children from all provinces through non-governmental organizations such as World Vision, Plan, Zambia Civic Education Association (ZCEA), Zambia Open Community Schools (ZOCS) for Lusaka schools, Zambia Community Schools Secretariat (ZCSS) covering the country, Children in Need (CHIN), Forum for African Women Educationalists Zambia (FAWEZA), Jesus Cares Ministries, Christian Alliance for Children, Cheshire Homes, Christian Children’s Fund (CCF), Youth Alive, and UNICEF. A number of other local NGOs are still voluntarily stepping in to participate. Vice-President Lupando Mwape has commended the efforts of the National Coalition for the Global Movement for Children mobilizing more than 50,000 children across the country to participate in the ‘Lesson for Life’. He said the Government would give the necessary support to organizations promoting the participation of children in national development particularly in the fight against HIV/AIDS. 'The Government and the country faces a daunting task to reverse the ravages of HIV/AIDS in the different sectors of our country.' He said Government was aware of the challenges that children faced in Zambia. The phenomenon of child poverty had given Government a serious challenge to mitigate the impacts of poverty arising mostly from AIDS deaths and unemployment. 'There are many children facing depravation in the areas of health, nutrition, education, shelter including emotional and psychological depravation. The Government is doing every thing possible to address the situation of children and I would like to acknowledge the important role that has been played by non-governmental organizations in supplementing the efforts of Government.' GMC Zambia Chairman Martin Silutongwe, expressed concern that children were hard hit by the pandemic, which had made many orphans out of them. 'Deaths largely in the reproductive age group means that children lose their parents/ guardians every day to AIDS at a time in their lives when they need parental support and guidance most. The HIV/AIDS epidemic gets a human face when its human toll is not taken as statistics but as parents, brothers, sisters and daughters and sons who are beloved family members.' Since the beginning of the epidemic, 650,000 children in Zambia had lost their mothers, fathers or both parents to the disease and projections indicate that by 2009, a total of 895,000 children will have been orphaned by AIDS. The true number of cumulative AIDS cases in Zambia is not well known but according to projection models the total was more than 60,000 by the end of 1998. Over 70,000 people a year contract the virus and between 90,000 and 100,000 persons develop full-blown AIDS each year. The impact of HIV/AIDS epidemic apart from wreaking havoc with lives of children had also paralyzed domestic or household economies with some children expected to contribute to the family budget on a daily basis. Poverty and family disintegration due to HIVAIDS deaths had created a class of children growing up either on their own as a household or on the street. 'Children migrate to the streets to live permanently or to work and return home. This has led to terms such as children in the street and children of the street. Children in the street are those who eat, work and spend the day on the street but have a home to return to at the end of the day. Children of the street work, eat, live and sleep on the street and may have no home to return to.' Another negative impact of orphanhood was that children lost much of their rights.'A growing number of orphans are suffering from loss of health care, schooling, inheritance. They suffer homelessness, vagrancy, starvation and exposure to HIV infections particularly among girl children as they engage in survival sex to make a living. The family disintegration that goes with orphaning is particularly harsh on children with disabilities who may need assistance to get from place to place or special care.' He explained that the GMC was a world wide movement of organizations and people including children uniting to build a world fit for children. It came into being about five years ago when a number of agencies came together to announce their commitment to building a Global Movement for Children with the aim of drawing all those who believe that rights of children must be a first priority. 'The Global Movement for Children (GMC) would like to highlight the participation of children as one of the important aspects in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The Global Movement for children has launched a world campaign on orphans and vulnerable children, HIV and AIDS. The campaign goal of the GMC is to mobilize people and political will to protect the rights and ensure the wellbeing of children affected by HIV/AIDS. One of the campaign objectives is to boost the level of understanding on HIV/AIDS and on the situation of Orphans and vulnerable children amongst children and young people thus promoting solidarity and awareness.' Acknowledging the effective cooperation among Government and civil society in tackling HIV/AIDS, he noted that various bodies had worked together consistently. Ms Temba commended World Vision and GMC partners for their intense efforts in ensuring that the Movement continues to surge forward. It was the shared vision that united all parties 'and the realization that no single organization can realize this vision alone.' Of the 12 million children globally who had lost at least one parent to the pandemic, Zambia is estimated to have contributed more than half a million.'All have suffered losing a parent to AIDS and growing up in circumstances without the support and care of their immediate family. HIV/AIDS is not just separating families; it has disproportionately affected the young and has continued to deliver a crushing blow to the next generation.' 'In Zambia, as in much of the developing world, HIV/AIDS has severely affected sectors that were achieving results for children, thus unraveling decades of painstaking progress and investment.' Miss Zambia, also Miss Africa International, told the gathering that the display of talent she had seen was 'just amazing.' She pledged to commit herself to helping children during and after her reign. Hailing GMC partners for a successful and eye-opening event, Miss Zambia whose real name is Cynthia Kanema, told the children: 'We will stand by you. We know it is a difficult world out there but we will hold your hand and stand by you.' |

Date Posted: 13:28:11 12/02/04 Thu sorry but I just had to write in. To Jackie from GA, who ever you really are-SHAME ON YOU! You need to ask your self what is your motivation. If its to improve the conditions of the pageant as you say, then the right way to do so would be to talk to Miss Dunbar and share your "complaints" one on one! NOT to post some annonymous nasty message on the internet for the whole world to see. Alas, if your whole purpose is to be mean spirited, vindictive, and classless I guess you did what you had to do. From what I understand the contestants stayed at the Marriot on Connecticutt Ave, for those of you who don't know DC- that is one NICE hotel! And expensive if I might add! 5 girls to a room is no big deal when there are two queen size beds to a room along with a roll out bed (I called to verify that info). And if you had to rehearse 5-6 hours a day, that is because this was a competition NOT a vacation! I checked the credit's, Miss Dunbar is the executive director, someone in that position doesn't have time to be your "big sister" that is precisely why there were volunteer organizers to help where Miss Dunbar simply would not be able to help. I can't speak on her alleged "bad" behavior but I repeat if she really was so rude and awefull take it up with her personally! We aren't interested in your personal gripes! We, the African community, are interested in promoting positive images of our youth and we should collectively help make this project the best event to hit the pageant scene yet! WE NEED TO STOP DESTROYING OUR OWN!!! Congrats on a job well done to everyone involved and I hope to see a bigger and better show next year! |

Date Posted: 08:54:26 12/02/04 Thu If you feel so strongly about your views of the pageant...why are you not stating your real name and what country you represent? (I looked through the program there is no Jackie) Perhaps it is because you know that your approach in handling your issues is less than gracious and that your objectives are more vindictive than in the spirit of making this pageant a better experience for years to come! I've been reading the other contestants responses and they all seem to be walking away from this experience w/ a more positive perspective. Perhaps you entered for the wrong reasons and that is why you are so disappointed. What ever the underlying motive...as an African, as an elder, and as an outsider looking in, I was pleased with the attempt made this year, its a new production so the only direction to go is up! Keep up the good work, and to the director- do what you have to to make the next years program the best yet! And a final word of council, to the disappointed contestants if you have issues take them up behind closed doors! Don't proclaim your anger for the public to see, that does nothing but stir up trouble and contention...be dignified young ladies and address your issues in the proper forum with courtesy and respect. Blessings |

Date Posted: 08:14:52 12/02/04 Thu I just wanted to congratulate all my fellow contestants and say that you all did a great job. I was really proud of everyone. Speaking as a contestant myself, I wouldn't say that the experience was fun. Like I said it was an experience that we will all remember and not necessarely in a good way. For future shows, Ellen please learn how to consider other people's feelings especially the contestants because without them, you wouldn't have a show. And one more thing, it wouldn't hurt you to pick up a book or two on how to organize beauty pageants. I think that may be your heart was in the right direction, but your actions spoke way louder than your words. You were supposed to be like a sister to us, but instead you played the role of a mean and money hungry step-mother. It was so funny how you were trying to be seo polite any time someone important was around you, but as soon as that person left, you were back to being your normal self. Please next time, make the experience fun for the contestants, and this time when you promise them something, please do it. Up to now, most of us still don't know what you did with the $ 500 that each contestant had to pay (our hair and nails were not done, and we ate fast food, and not to mention that we had to sleep at five people in one room), so I ask you again, what happened to the money? Please don't take this personnally because we didn't take it personnally when you were working us 5 to 6 hours a day while we were starving, and having us running around in the cold. Keep working on the pageant, but learn first from the mistakes in the past. I know that it wasn't an easy job, and if you think that it is too hard, stop because no one will blame you. Whatever you do, just do it right or don't do it at all. Jackie Atlanta, GA USA |

Date Posted: 16:48:06 11/28/04 Sun Cynthia, Congrats to you my dear. You deserve this title your grace and humility are what really make your beauty shine! You are the perfect selection for the crown! May God bless your efforts and goals that you have set out to accomplish! It was a pleasure getting to know you and I hope to be seeing you soon enough in January. And to all the other ladies, let us work to dispell all the negative comments and gripes about the pageant. We worked hard for that night and inspite of there being one crown to go around we are all queens...and we still have our humanitarion projects to focus on! Much love to you all, Loide |

Date Posted: 15:57:14 11/28/04 Sun I have been given a wonderful platform - Cynthia ![]() By Augustine Mukoka I have been given a wonderful platform, says Miss Africa International beauty pageant winner Cynthia Kanema. Speaking on arrival from the United States of America where she won the continental crown, the reigning Miss Zambia queen says the award had given her a wider view to breakthrough the modeling world. “It meant a lot for me to win the crown. It was a wonderful event that gives me a wonderful platform in this industry,” she says. ![]() Cynthia says she was proud to represent Zambia at an adorable level. “It made me realise that even in humility you have to show people what you are capable of doing,” she adds. Cynthia says in the talent segment of the competition, she came up with a poetic explanation of the features on the Zambian flag. She says despite the problems Zambia faces, she explained how the symbol of an eagle on the flag reminds Zambians on their abilities to be above their challenges. Cynthia praises God for helping her win the cherished beauty award. “I have been blessed with an intelligent mind. There were a lot of other contestants with better qualifications than me but I am glad I managed to win,” she says. Cynthia was grateful for the support she received from the Zambian community in Washington and as part of her winning package, the Zambian beauty ambassador will be back in the USA in January. During this visit, Cynthia will have an opportunity to tour one of the world’s largest film industry towns, Hollywood. “For now, I am now working with a number of organisations in relation to the fight against HIV and AIDS,” she adds. Winning Miss Africa International will also enhance Cynthia’s brainchild idea of promoting cultural exchange programmes among beauty queens. “This time it will be bigger and better. At least we have learnt from the past experience and we are meeting more people to help make this event attractive,” she said. Cynthia arrived on Tuesday morning about 10 minutes to 07:00 and Big Brother Africa reality show winner Cherise Makubale was at hand to welcome the stunning beauty. And newly crowned Model of the World Africa beauty queen Lonah Shawa is eyeing the prestigious Nokia Face of Africa title. In an interview shortly after she returned from China where she won the latest crown, Lonah says an African crown would add a lot of value to her modelling career. “I now want to give Face of Africa a shot. I have really looked forward to this and I hope I can make it,” she says. Lonah says although she was considering a number of offers that are coming up, her prime target was to take part in the Face of Africa competition slated for South Africa next year. She expresses gratitude at the support given to her before and after the Model of the World beauty pageant. Lonah says she was overwhelmed with the reception which she received when she arrived last Saturday afternoon. “I didn’t expect such a welcome. I am so grateful to the people that came to the airport,” he adds. Lonah says the achievement was massive and added a lot of meaning to her modelling career. |

Date Posted: 17:36:01 11/27/04 Sat Kanema crowned Miss Africa International REIGNING Miss Zambia Cynthia Kanema has been crowned Miss Africa International at a beauty contest held at the Lincoln Theatre in Washington at the weekend. And Miss Tourism World Zambia contestant, Lonah Shawa has been crowned Model of The World Africa beauty queen in China. In a telephone interview shortly after her triumph, Cynthia said she owed her crown to the Zambian people for the support rendered to her since she emerged on the modelling scene. “I feel so happy about this. It is all because of the support of the Zambian people that I managed to win,” she said. “To me, I take it as a challenge and an honour to represent the country at this level.” Cynthia said she could not believe she had been crowned queen of Miss Africa International beauty pageant that attracted 21 other contestants. She said competition was stiff at the contest and to emerge winner was a desirable thing all the African beauty queens looked forward to. Apart from the crown, Cynthia was also given the Spirit Award. “Up to now, I feel like I am dreaming this came my way. It is really something big for me and my country,” she said. Cynthia said the Spirit Award was given to a contestant identified to have believed and showed passion in the pageant. ![]() Miss Mozambique, Loide Jorge was crowned first princess while Miss Burundi Solange was second princess. Other countries that made it to the top five brackets are Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Cynthia was early this year crowned first Princess at the Miss Malaika beauty pageant held in South Africa. Meanwhile, Lonah who emerged fifth in the Model of The World also received the Best Body Award in the world. Miss Tourism World Zambia national director Caroline Makasa confirmed Lonah’s achievement in China on Sunday evening. “This is something good for us as a country. Cynthia has also done it in the USA and here we are with Lonah,” she said. ![]() Lonah finished behind beauty queens from Thailand, Ukraine, China and Poland to see Zambia assume fifth place at the contest. |

Date Posted: 07:47:01 11/22/04 Mon >Life is a series of battles, you must choose yours wisely. Before entering the pageant make sure that you are doing it for the right reasons, otherwise you will find yourself complaining and irritated because you didn't get what you wanted. The experience is such that regardless of what you win or do not win you must view it all as an experience to better yourself. There can only be one Miss Africa International each year. If its not you, who are you going to be? What are you going to do with your life, because the next day you have to move on. Use what you have to make your place in this world. My darling friend Cynthia is a caring, humble, beautiful well spoken person she made those characteristics work for her and as a result won a crown. Prepare yourself for the best and worst and then just have fun! That is my advice to you. |

Date Posted: 13:00:43 11/21/04 Sun I did attend the pageant. I think many of the previous comments echo my sentiments. The organization was lacking and that resulted in a poor display of professionalism. However, I think in light of the newness of the pageant -all is NOT lost!! I would encourage all the people w/ rude and negative comments to re-consider what their true objectives are...if it is truly to encourage the director and organizors to do better next year, then internet bashing is a shameless way of attaining that objective. Positive constructive criticism is a more workable solution NOT rude commentaries that do nothing more than create devisiveness!! I think those in charge should restrategies and come up with a working alternative that will make next years program trully shine. are there any additional pics of Miss Mozambique? |

Will any of you be participating next year as contestant if not in what role will you play in the Miss Africa International Pageant such as recruiting, fundraising, etc? 2. Since you all have come close to each other in the pageant are there any hopes of any of you working together to help Africa? 3. How did you prepare for the pageant? 4. What have you gained from the pageant? 5. In what ways can the young African woman be empowered? |

Date Posted: 19:16:55 11/17/04 Wed Miss Africa International Pageant 2003 On a cool Autumn night, in the heart of Washington, the final contestants to the Miss Africa title converged at the newly completed Washington Convention Center. Parking was full, traffic was heavy and security was tight, but the mood was energized this Saturday night. Several types had showed up: Fashion designers, critics, embassy representatives, news reporters, lobbyists, Statesmen and the Washington elite. These high profilers didn't make entry easy for the ordinary specatator. The pageant basically is sponsored by Miss Africa International Organization with joint support from well-wishers and media consortium. Their official site has more info, but they only have small closeup mugshots of the contestants. The three areas of judging for this year's theme were Beauty, Brains and Culture. Each of the final qualifiers had to sufficiently demonstrate to a panel of judges their ability to possess the above talents. As a result of the often pseudo-African contests, the event was carefully named Miss Africa International to make it clear of its cosmopolitan and Pan-African nature. The entry requirements were also strict and purposely set high to increase the level of candidates. First in order to meet the criteria, each candidate had to be either born in Africa or be a direct African descendant no more than 1 generation away. So one's claim could not go beyond parents. One contestant told us she actually had to bring in her passport. Then the typical swimsuit contest was done away and a more Africanized edition of native-wear introduced. To ensure intelligence, critical uncensored thinking was encouraged and cultural identity was reinforced with traditional background music and sayings. Generally the event was very Africanized- from the use of African time right to the selection or election-like process. It seemed more of an Apollo-style judgement at the end- with the audiences' popular candidates getting the most scores. The largest group of nationals were the Nigerians who made their presence very known. And just like the typical African elections, you couldn't help sense that there was more at play than just what you saw. Despite the few timing and light control flaws, the audience -especially fellas were thrilled by the high-calibre contestants who persuasively attempted to seduce their minds and hearts with their charm. In the end, each area was tested. Those who were intellectual, got a dose of words from the likes of Miss Burundi, the culturally attuned had a chance to critique them all during traditional dance and talent time, while those who were after pure raw African-defined beauty were delighted at these girls shaking their thing like some Lingala video enticement. Not that this was the only form of beauty. Actually the event undisputably catered to all three types. The GQ, Mercedes driving professional type had his fill watching the evening gown parade and the contestants in classy, dress outfits; The more academic ones were given some critical points to analyze from some candidates and had the opportunity to see mental skill and intellectual finesse during Q and A session; On the other hand, those traditional types attracted to the primitive, raw beauty form of the woman bare-foot and near naked got a chance to behold theirs too. So in all, you came out feeling satisfied with the variety of views without them compromising the authenticity of the show. Unlike mainstream shows often seen here, none of the contestants acts were censored. After all, that would be defeating the purpose if the African style was watered-down to fit the conventional norms and boy did they take advantage of that. As for the winner, that was an entirely different affair. You may want to think of the show as a means in itself. Below is a walkthrough of the event you will probably see soon on some filtered TV broadcast near you. If you feel strongly about a contestant, you could participate in the unofficial vote at the end |

Date Posted: 15:59:24 11/16/04 Tue First of all the pageant was NOT well done!!!! The music was not right for either the contestants or the dance group that was there. They looked like they were lost at one point and had to come up with something. The show was way too long. Having been to the show last year I was expecting to see a difference, maybe it was generous of me to have paid even more money this year for a worse show. When I was at the door, it was a fiasco to get in because people were complaining about tickets and VIP tickets. I saw Ms Ellen Dunbar at the door and she was quite rude, dismissive or evasive to those who were asking questions about tickets. I was really shocked considering the fact that WE are paying to see your show. She had no type of respect for her audience. Then Ms. Dunbar looked sooo trashy on the stage with that horrible dress while everyone else was looking spectacular in the traditional wear. This is an AFRICAN pageant!!! Why did she not think to wear something much more better for her audience? And then when it came time to present the awards, it looked like she was writing something on the paper, which I have never, ever, never seen before on a pageant. Did she change the names or something on the awards? It is just sad that anything that Africans do has a stigma of being not quite well done, highly unorganized or below standard. This was not the type of pageant to boast about. The good thing I can say was that the girls were very attractive and regal. I was very proud to see all of the different beauties of African heritage on that stage. Way to go to Miss Zambia for her winning the pageant. She is gorgeous. But I will definitely not be attending another Miss Africa International pageant ever again because of the shear rudeness and disrespect of Ms. Dunbar and the unorganization of the pageant. |

Date Posted: 17:08:42 11/14/04 Sun Thanks for your input Nikki! Although the pageant may not have been the best maybe a constructive effort by you and or the contestants will cause changes with in the pageant. Have you communicated that to Ellen Dunbar, Producer of the pageant. What do the contestants think about the pageant? Remember that pageants are hard efforts to produce! Do you have pics you can post? |

Date Posted: 13:12:25 11/14/04 Sun this was the worst production of all times. it was so kiatic, the orgonizers did not even feed their contestants throughout the day and when they did feed them, they brought them McDonalds. they put five girls in one tiny room to sleep in over night, which is simply not acceptable and ridiculous.they put the short girls in the back and tall one s in front. the audience was not able to see all of the contestants. people were passing out backstage. the sound system and choreography were terrible, the paid professional hired to assist the girls were not doing their jobs. another concern of mine was that the show took too long and they kept messing up the music. i cannot believe they forgot to mention what the winner took home. it is unbelievable. the judging was so bias, the organizers preselected the winners based on the bias for their country's representative and on who contributed the most money to the event...Ms ELEN DUNDAR had false advertisement. YOU WILL DEFINETLY HEAR FROM ME IN THE FUTURE. they stated beforehand that they were going to offer the girls several oppurtinities, such as being on talkshows, and meeting one of the judges, Boris Kodjo (sp)and schoolarship oppurtinities. i was with the contestants the whole time and i did not witness any of that.someone can actually file a lawsuit against the sponsors and organizers. now i understand why some of the girls dropped out of the pageant. and to think that i wanted to be a part of it next year, not any more... it was absolutly a waist of my money and time. i feel sorry for the participants and the unpaid volunteers of the pageant. the only positive thing was the good turn out of africans across the nation. i felt like i was in a episode of coming to america. the audience was beautifully dressed in traditional attires. i was also pleased with the winner of the pageant, i meet and spoke with her. she is a beautiful, bright, and timid young lady. PS:TO THE AUTHOR OF THIS WEBSITE, PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE MY MESSAGE. I AM ONLY SPEAKING ABOUT WHAT I WITNESSED LAST NIGHT, WHICH IS THE TRUTH. THESE PEOPLE ( THE PAGEANT ORGONIZERS) HAVE TO BE ABLE TO TAKE CRITICISM IN ORDER TO AVOID THE MISTAKES MADE FOR THE FOLLOWING YEARS. I WLL KEEP WRITING NEGATIVELLY ABOUT THE PAGEANT UNTIL IT IS FIXED. IF NEED TOO I WILL FILE THE LAWSUIT ON BEHALF OF THE CONTESTANTS BECAUSE THEY WERE ROBBED OF THEIR TIME, SPIRIT, LOVE FOR PARTICIPATION AND MOST IMPORTANTLY MONEY... |
