It is very helpful to have someone who is a bit disconnected from you to give you a honest critique. There are, as with any kind of "game",- rules of thumb, fine points, and situations to avoid that someone else who has the experience can pass on. Those things that it would take years or tons of pageants to learn.

BUT, as with many products and services available elsewhere it is very much buyer beware...

There are a number of coaches that charge for there services and some equally capable people that do not charge. I would first seek out someone who wouldn't mind giving you a few pointers at no charge. Then if you get really serious-then seek out a coach that is experienced in the system you are going to compete in. If you choose to retain someone on a paying bases ASK FOR REFERENCES and check them out. Don't be afraid to ask around for referrals. You will also find that some coaches specialize in different aspects of pageants like interview or modeling. Also, beware of vendors that push their free coaching services if you buy their product. I have seen some in the photography and other pageant related business do this just to perpetuate their bottom line. Also I have heard of some coaches advertise that because they judge pageants they know what is correct and not, beware of these people also. Just because you can judge doesn't mean you can coach.

They are going to hate me for doing this but AK & MH are two that are honest in their opinions. You may want to seek them out for a few pointers.

Hope this helps,

Papa B
