This depends on which kind of Database you're meaning. I don't know Server-Side JavaScript so I can't help you on server-side database.

The following is an example of Client-Side JavaScript search engine:

The search engine's database is in the text files, which is generated by VBA (MS Excel).

There is also a way for Client-Side JavaScript to read a file on web server with the help of Java applet. I may put the example here soon.
