Subject: Rules on batting the puck with the hand

Interesting action last night, and in all my years between the pipes, I had never seen such a goal - batted with the hand off the goalie (intentionally, apparently)to make a rebound, and an attacker bangs it in.

As a result of the after-game discussions, I checked out the NHL rules on passes and handling the puck with the hands:

Rule 75 - passes: rebounds off goalies pads ARE NOT a change of possession, so attacker-goalie rebound-attacker IS a pass (the same applies for assists, so it is logical.

Rule 53 - playing the puck with the hand: In certain instances, a pass with the hand in a player's DEFENSIVE ZONE does not cause a stoppage, but in the attacking zone, there is an immediate play stoppage, and face-off outside the blue line.

So according to NHL rules, it would seem that Matt's batting the puck off me to the other attacker was an illegal pass, the goal should be disallowed, and a face-off taken outside the blue line.

Anybody care to double-check that, and maybe check out the International Rules?

Richard
