She watched him approach, frozen on the spot, motionless, eyes dull, withdrawn. When his muzzle touched hers, she flinched involuntarily. Shame coursed through her every vein, and fear...but so did the boundless love she felt for him. And because she loved him so much, and because she saw the love he felt for her in his eyes...it made it hurt all the more. She’d had her own trust betrayed, and in being betrayed she felt she had betrayed him, too.
And when he asked the question, the question she had dreaded him asking since she had seen him...she broke. Pain filled her eyes, and she pulled away from him, hanging her head to hide her face. “I...I didn’t mean to...” she whispered, her voice unnaturally thick, her words choppy. “He...I was resting, and he...he...I didn’t know he was there, and he...” She broke off, sobbing dryly; her store of tears was long since spent. “I...I tried to get away...I did...but I was so...I didn’t know what to do...and...” She closed her eyes tightly, the memories of what had happened flashing in her mind as plain as if it were just happening.
She shook her head roughly, as though trying to shake the memories away, to deny what had happened. “I’m sorry...I’m sorry...I didn’t mean for it to...to happen...sorry...”
