Subject: An obit clerk got Allison fired? Come on.
In reply to: 's message, "Re: Best Walzer story" on 16:45:01 02/15/05 Tue

Allison had been at the TL 25 years, was a vice president of the newspaper, got paid God-knows-what. She fetched coffee for the Pulitzer judges in New York City every year.

Paul was a well-meaning but high-strung clerk who had been on the paper about 10 months and couldn't take the pressure of the obit desk.

Allison has crossed lots of people. The landscape is littered with the bodies of reporters and editors who left rather than deal with the culture there. To say nothing of the bigshots and others in Wilkes-Barre who have been ripped in print/Sayso.

And an obituary clerk, potentially an obituary clerk who may be slightly anti-Semetic, was able to end her career? I don't buy it. There's something else.

And about that "shove it up her blah blah" remark: If it isn't a racial slur, then what exactly is it? Warm greetings? Friendly newsroom banter? Maybe this is the liberal in me, but if I ever said something like that I would expect to be fired on the spot.
