Subject: WARD ROOM TABLE

For those of you who don't remember. In 1968 the officers of the Blue Crew had a table made for the ward room. The top was kidney shaped, in two pieces, and was mounted on a pedital which allowed it to be raised for playing cards or lowered to use as a coffee table.

The crew always pulled pranks on each other and the officers were not immune. Someone took the table as a prank. It was intended to be returned to the officers on half way night.

I saw someone hide half of the table top behind the gyro across from the aft door of the mess deck. As a joke of my own, I took this half and hid it outboard of the piping in the machinery space aft of the chief's quarters.

It was a good joke on the one who hid it when it came time to return it. The next morning the boat was searched for the table. I thought that the joke had gone far enough and went to get the section I had hidden but someone else had found it and moved it.

After several field days the boat was clean but the table was not returned. The Gold Crew took over, the table was not found. The Blue Crew took over again and took the boat into the yards. The table was never returned. If I had to guess, I think it was shot out the GDU during a field day.

It has been thirty-three years. That's long enough. If anyone can shed more light on the prank, let us know.
