I think that it's a great idea, but something like this can also be a huge amount of work for the planning committee (or a full-time job for one individual). It sounded to me like Jack was volunteering...didn't it? I'll lend a hand, and will contribute some cash, but prefer to let my main contribution be the Website stuff.
I think Daytona sounds inviting, and bike week at Daytona is probably the only time and place that a bunch of ex submariners could have fun and not particulary stand out in the crowd (or be conspicuous targets for arrest). On the other hand, making arrangements for a place to get together and places to stay might be difficult during that week.
What do you guys think?
The one thing that I'd advise, having had some previous experience in such matters, is that we work it so that those planning to attend make a clear committment comfortably in advance, and that they agree to still pay their part if they have to back out and there's still a bill to be paid. We don't want anyone to get stuck.
One formal way to do that is to contact a hotel/meeting place, get a rate from them, and then have everyone send in a check by a certain date (made out to the hotel ... not one of us) to cover their share of the cost of the meeting place (room arrangements made separately, with some sort of group rate).
An informal way is just to say that we'll all get together at a certain bar on X date at Y time and someone springs $5 for the cost of a stack of nametags and a felt pen.
My *preferred* approach would be to find some beach area (state park?) where open beverages are permitted, have kind souls send in an advance contribution toward a keg (or two), and let volunteers bring some sort of food. There almost has to be a view of, and contact with, the ocean for this thing, and I haven't seen dru... uh... uninhibited Von Steuben sailors pelting each other with potato salad in years!
That's my 2 cent comment...anyone else?
