Subject: Movie Monday! What did you see this weekend? I

watched some of my holiday faves. I recorded a few on the DVR and I saw Elf, Rudolph and my beloved, Love, Actually. I have a tradition of watching It's a Wonderful Life while wrapping gifts and I got that done as well. Still have Home Alone, Trading Places and The Grinch (animated version) to get through.

It kinda fun to re-watch the stuff you used to watch with your family when you were just kids.

Holiday themed--National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and then a lot of others including:

Ben is Back: Lucas hedges and Julia Roberts are so good. It is 24 hours at Christmas when Julia's characer's son comes home from sober living. Her husband (his stepfather) and her daughter do not want him back but they compromise and say he can stay a day. Things go badly. It is pretty gut wrenching and mostly Julia and Lucas in most of the scenes. highly recommend but it is a tough subject.

Dumplin' (Netflix): Jen Anniston plays the mom of an overweight daughter. Mom is an ex beauty queen and very into the whole pageant scene. Her daughter Willowdean aka Dumplin' has just lost her Aunt Lucy who was the true mom to her growing up. It is essentially a story about accepting yourself and going out and getting what you want for yourself. Dolly Parton and her songs are a big part of the story. It was OK but not anything special for me.

First Man: Ryan Gosling stars as Neil Armstrong. It is ultimately the story of the first man on the moon but it is also a more person story of Armstrong. Some well done intense rocket scenes etc.. And I think Ryan Gosling does a good job showing a man with some demons who becomes a major part of history.

If Beale Street Could Talk: Newcomer Kiki Layne and Stephan James (Homecoming among other things) star and Regina King is awesome as the mother of Kiki Layne's character. It is a screenplay based on James Baldwin's novel and it is another challenging watch. Tish and Fonny are engaged and then Fonny is arrested for rape. A crime he did not commit. The movie flips back and forth from their love story and some scenes leading up to the arrest and then the efforts of Tish her parents and Fonny's father to try to get the truth out there and get him out of jail. It is set in the early 70s and highlights the racism and injustice that African Americans faced then (and truthfully still face). It is a story told deliberately and slowly with a large visual component to it. Uplifting and terribly sad at the same time. Kiki Layne is luminous. It is the same director as Moonlight.

Boy Erased: Lucas Hedges and Nicole Kidman star as mother and son. Russell Crowe is the father. It is a story about Conversion Therapy (the idea that you can change someone's sexual orientation by treating the "chosen behavior" often religious based). It is a true story or at least based on the memoir by Garrard Conley. The boy Jared is forcibly outed to his Baptist pastor father who sends him to church supported conversion therapy. His mother goes along with it and takes him to the 12 day program which is 9-5 and is an evaluation of how much therapy her needs. The therapy and I use that term dripping with sarcasm employed by Love in Action is repulsive and made me shout at the screen (thank goodness I was home). Lucas Hedges is very good and I think it is an important movie since Conversion therapy is still legal in over 30 states and should not be legal at all IMO.

After that we switched to the ID channel and watched Homicide Hunter for some light relief JK.

You can't go wrong with Ryan Gosling.
