Subject: Movie Monday! What did you see this weekend? I saw

a couple of movies. I moved from watching Oscar contenders to something lighter and blockbuster-y. Godzilla vs. Kong starring the always hot Alexander SkarsgÄrd. It was fun, loud and had some great effects. A good escapist movie with a strong cast (including the title critter characters). But I went back to my bread and butter--dark, dreary dramas with unsatisfying endings. I saw The Nest (2020) with Jude Law and Carrie Coon. An English commodities broker and his American wife living in New York pick up and move to London where the husband thinks he can really strike it rich. Jude Law is always perfect playing smarmy liars and he's got this one dialed in. Really strong performances, but you know, dark and dreary and unsatisfying ending.

Nomadland, the big winner. Frances McDormand could not BE more depressing, slow or angry in this sad tale. The story gave its audience a rare view into the lifestyle and psyche of the homeless/jobless, whether by choice or bad luck. She has relatives and friends who care about her, but she just can't stay put or stay in touch with them for long. Not my type of movie, but I can see why the film's unique approach won it the Oscar.

kind of a dour person anyway, so these outlier roles suit her unique talents. And yes, it sounds deliciously depressing.
