The script was originally for 5 white Viet Nam vets who return to Nam to retrieve the remains of their squad leader. Lee reimagined the film with 5 black vets, and focused on the black experience, with issues of patriotism and prejudice. The film started out so well, but deteriorated into violence that made no sense. I expected more from Spike Lee.
