O ISBN esta' em vigor nos últimos trinta anos e é usado por 160 países. Este artigo preparado por NISO (National Information Standards Organization) apresenta uma revisão informativa do número serial para livros

bem como as razões para sua mudança.

Em 2005 a metodologia atual do numero ISBN será substituída por um código de barras de 13 dígitos. A nova norma esta sendo revista por um grupo do ISO - TC 46 SC 9 WG4 - em http://www.nlc-bnc.ca/iso/tc46sc9/

Participam do grupo o EUA, Canadá e 8 outros paises e três agencias internacionais.
