Hi Kelsey,
I agree 100% with what you are saying but I think you are a little quick to dismiss the halter I'm advocating as being similar to the chain over the nose - its so much more than that. The secret with the halter is that its made of marine rope (its slippy). When wearing a chain over the nose, if the horse pulls the chain tightens, when the horse stops pulling the chain stays tight for a few seconds until the links release. With the marine rope, when the horse stops pulling the slippy rope releases instantly - its this instant reward the horse understands. Unlike the chain over the nose, the halter also tightens over the poll and likewise gives an instant release when pulling stops. The horse understands that to stop pulling means instantaneous reward (release of pressure) - its not just the reward that works its the timing thats critical. The same is true in riding, timing is everything, a second too late and it just doesn't have the same connection for the horse.
This is the secret of the halter I'm suggesting, I've not found another that works so well. However, I agree with you that confidence, consistency, calmness are all essential to success and the halter on its own will achieve nothing.
