Hi Donna:

Everything you wrote I totally agree with. My Friesian just turned 5 two weeks ago and we have alot of work ahead of us as well. I am only working him indoors right now because he seems to be terrified of the great big outdoors. There goes all of my hopes of trail riding this summer as I have seen what he can do when he is turned out. I definitely would not want to be on his back during one of his "racehorse" displays. For something so big, they are so agile!

We even had to adjust his feed because he was really "feeling his oats" and becoming very hard to handle. Now he has settled down, the effects of his gelding in September finally kicking in.

We are working on the impulsion problem right now as it seems the nice rounded carriage he displayed at sale may have been rushed on him too soon. My baby has really lost that rounded look and even my instructor is having a problem. I cannot understand how 4 months in and he seems to be going backwards in training. His teeth have been checked and his health is fine. My instructor keeps telling me to just ride, ride, ride. We are only at 4 days per week which is supposed to be inline with a Friesian at his age. I only wish we could do a nice hack once in awhile but that does not seem possible at this point. His shoes have also been removed so he is enjoying the barefoot life and his hooves are perfect now (which was totally another issue but solved now).

So, I could rush his training but still realize he is only 5 and has another 3 years to go to be considered an adult.

Just an email to let you know that you are not the only one with "visions" :)

>Glad I'm not the only one with a spooky one !
>I too always thought Friesians were supposed to be
>bomproof (they lied !)
>I love my boy dearly but he is hard work, not the
>quiet hack I thought I had bought.
>I have gone back to basics with him, long-reining ,
>lunging and he has started to listen to me once again.
>There is nothing nasty about him, he just dosn't know
>his own strenght, so just a little spook whilst
>leading him can knock you off your feet, while he just
>stands there looking at me as if to say "Did I do that
>mum ?"
>We will get there in the end, but it is taking more
>time than I thought. He is rising 5, so still a baby
>really, but I did have visions of hacking him out by
>now. Still no rush.
