I think Friesian breeding really has its pro's and con's, and I am starting to see why people are starting to use them for crossbreeding, as Alex said above. The gene pool is so small, but then what can be expected when they are coming from just 3 stallions and a handful of mares? I am feeling a little negative at the moment, as Ive just lost a young Friesian colt to a genetic defect, which was unapparent to anyone up until he got severe colic. He was sadly PTS as the defect was not able to be repaired. Unfortunately, due to this specific defect not being seen in the Friesian before, the dutch are unwilling to look at at further, and do not believe it to be a new problem with the Friesian, even though, the top vet surgeons who dealt with him, have told me different. He had a low inbreeding %, however, its made me extremely cautious. I'd be terrifed to use one of the newer stallions now for breeding - I'd definately stick to the old! I'm sure your mare will be ok - have you tried semen from a different stallion/ or maybe wait until next year when she's a little more mature?
