Ergots are, indeed, very similar to chestnuts except for their locations. They are very normal, but not all horses have them. If they get too long, they can be carefully removed by the same methods used to remove chestnuts. It seems like most Friesian ergots are covered by feathers and so are left alone.

Thankfully, I have not had to deal with scratches, so I can't lend you any personal experience with that. You could start by reading about scratches in the "Care and Health" section under Reference, a link to which you can find on the home page of this website.

Here is a link that you may find interesting. Skin problems in the fetlock area have several possible causes. I printed this whole article out and keep it in the tack room.
