Subject: Sudden Lameness in Friesian- Favoring Front Leg
In reply to: Randy 's message, "Sudden Lameness in Friesian- Favoring Front Leg" on 15:00:29 10/30/09 Fri

Hi Randy:

Thanks! My Friesian is fine now and we have been working since Tuesday very lightly. Today we had our first lesson since the problem and he was so eager to get back to work!

It was either a bad, mis-step or possibly his shoes bothering him (it was the 6th going on 7th week of shoeing).

We had the farrier out who checked everything and re-shod him.

Earlier this week I did some light longe work with him and he was dancing all over the place, really letting go in the indoor with some spectacular bucks (I already reduced his grain by 50% too). Absolutely no sign of pain and no swelling either.

Needless to say, I am not sure how much of it was an act since he gives me a hard time if I don't visit him for 1 day. Cost me a nice vet bill too :)

Thanks again for your feeback.

I had a very similar experience 3 weeks ago that we
>noticed right during a show. We scratched as soon as
>we noticed. The funny thing is during a show you
>immediately think, Oh no, I hurt my horse. muscles,
>tendons who knows! So I decided to call the vet right
>away.
>He used these squeezy things like giant pliers and he
>pressed on the outside against the inside of the hoof
>wall with them and you could see her flinch when he
>sqeezed certain areas. Then he pulled the shoe, and
>you could see she had instant relief when the shoe
>came off. She was in a lot of pain. Then he scraped
>some of the hoof area on the bottom and we soaked
>every day twice day for ten days and packed it with
>some stuff. She seemed all better 2 days later but I
>still soaked and packed every day. Good quiet time
>with your horse!! Put some music on and have a drink.

>>My Friesian has never been lame before in the past 2

>>Baroque Friesian who is now favoring his front left
>>leg which is swollen in the tendon and fetlock area
>>with heat in the hoof.
>>
>>I did limited work with him last week and nothing

>>Saturday the sudden lameness was discovered maybe from
>>some type of stall injury.

>>Currently, the vet visited this morning and gave me
>>the basic "let's wait and see what happens" (so
>>incredibly frustrating). There is more heat in the
>>fetlock/hoof area than there was yesterday so I am

>>
>>Now we are in the middle of cold hosing and apply
>>cooling masks to the leg which helps alot. He can
>>walk on it whereas yesterday he could barely move.
>>The trot was also better when the vet examined him
>>than yesterday.
>>
>>Could this be some type of locking up syndrome? but
>>that would not explain the swelling unless it was

>>
>>Could it be from mud fever as well? I really cannot

>>
>>I am also having a bit of a muck problem but nothing
>>alarming and I should know after having him for 2

>>
>>Thanks for your feedback! This is so frustrating!!!
