Subject: Safe Treats

Hi all:

I just had the Osteopath out to check my 7 year old Friesian gelding and everything is great. When I let her know that I usually like to give him a banana 1 to 2 times per week in addition to other limited treats (only carrots, apples and a mix known here as Kräuterwiese which has apples bits, peppermint etc and horses just love it) she said absolutely no way should I be giving my Friesian bananas with their known stomach problems (prone to colic).

This is quite surprising because this is actually his favorite treat of all and I am quite sad that he will miss out on this now. I do not overfeed him (his coat is so beautifully shiney and jet black this time of year), he gets a small amount of grain and the usual hay (no alfalfa here in Switzerland it is all grown locally) so what do you all think? Should I chance it or are there any studies regarding Friesians and a potassium breakdown problem in the gut? She said that they do not digest this like we do and she seemed very knowledgeable.

Thanks so much!

Cat
