Subject: Friesian Buying
In reply to: Jesse 's message, "RE: Randy, Friesian Buying- Support the Importers" on 22:22:10 04/05/08 Sat

I am not going to get into the import/home grown argument because I live in the UK. We have very few breeders and the Netherlands is much closer, so importing is not such an issue.
What I would like to pick up on though is to agree with Jesse that 'these are horses'. Too many people buy into the myth that all friesians are calm, gentle, loving, easy peasy to handle. Yes, they are fantastic horses with a very distinctive type and personality to go with it but they are essentially horses. I think many inexperienced owners buy them thinking that they will be 'easy' just because they are friesians and in doing so set themselves up for a big disappointment. Unfortunately, many breeders/sellers perpetuate this myth because it helps to sell them.
I have been lucky and have a friesian with a wonderful bold, calm, yet sensitive nature. I don't kid myself that they are all like that though. I refused to buy sight unseen and turned down several before I found 'the one'. It really helps to see the horse in the flesh before you part with your cash, even then it is no guarantee of success - it does improve the odds though.
