My partner and I celebrate Yule.
By the way, the 'xmas tree' is not specifically a Christian symbol - I like trees too, although I would only choose a living one, not one of those that have been chopped down and no longer have roots. I see no celebration in wastefully killing trees just so our homes can look pretty! Many times we have not had a tree, or have chosen to decorate our indoor plants or a small potted shrub from the garden. That way they can still live on after the celebrations :)
I think this year I will be making a 'tree' up from branches we have cut during our gardening, it will be one we can use again and again and can decorate with natural objects (like fir cones or slices of dried orange or mini pomanders). I've already made a Yule wreath from the ivy and holly we needed to cut back during the gardening job (bit early for me but we joined in with the rest of the town in decorating our shop windows along the theme of a 'winter wonderland').

As far as gifts go - we tend to make gifts instead of buying them in, no particular theme, just whatever feels right f or the person we want to give something to. It might be chocolates or biscuits, or something crafty... pretty much anything goes lol!

As for ideas for your Gift Basket - it depends on who it's for? Were you looking to include things 'sepcifically Yule-ish?' In which case... how about homemade spiced cookies, maybe a mulled-wine herb mix, stollen cake, nuts and dried fruits etc... or some herbal bath products or oils you can burn on an oil burner with a spicey / zesty frgrance, or herbs they could add to their fires... ? perhaps you could decorate the basket with a little sprig of holly or make them a decoration they can use during the festive season... or some candles, always useful during winter! If the person you're making the gift basket up for is a nature-lover perhaps some bird food they could leave out to encourage birds to their garden - we mustn't forget the wildlife during our celebrations!
hmmm after my mini ramble I still say it really depends on the person you're making it up for. One year I made up some wheat-filled cushions that you can heat up in the oven / microwave which store the heat and keep you nice and toasty warm. Some people got herbs in their cushions too depending on what I felt they needed the most... always varies from person to person, year to year :)

oops- fear I have waffled on long enough... over to someone else now me thinks :)

What a lovely thread sweetsong. And whitewolf, you never waffle - I so loved reading your post!

I love the mid winter customs, the solstice, festival of light on dark days..... food and handicrafts (hope I can find some time this year), song and dance...giving the gift of music would be in my basket!

I like to give food to those popping over. I have spicey biscuits waiting, and in a little basket they would be lovely too to carry home to share with their friends. I am sure there is a wonderful recipe on this site too :)

I always make up some chai in a glass jar: nutmeg, cinammon, cardamom, ginger root, VANILLA.....yay!! :)

Am so sleepy now so will sign off for now......
