How the Pleiades Came to Be

An Onondaga Tale as told by Cat

Once long ago a group of Indians was traveling to one of their favorite hunting grounds. It was a good place and one they had visited many times. It was a leisurely trip and they traveled for several days stopping to make camp in favorite spots where they had camped before.

One day they reached the beautiful lake, Kan-ya-ti-yo. It was a truly magical place. Squirrels chattered in the beech and chestut trees and deer and bear came to lake where the waters were thick with fat fish.

The chief who was called Tracks in the Water, led his people to the lake shore where he gave thanks to the Great Spirit. "Grandfather, we thank you for helping us to arrive safely in this good place." Then Tracks in the Water turned to his people and said " We will build our winter lodges here, and may the Great Spirit who has watched over us on our journey send us plenty of game and bless us with peace and good health.

The autumn days passed and it was a pleasant time. The people built winter lodges and the hunting and fishing was good. The children however, had little to do and were left to devise their own amusements. They began to gather each day in a special spot near the lake to dance. They called it their jolly dance. One day, an old man appeared. The children stopped dancing in awe, for they had never seen anyone like this old man. His long hair shown like silver and he was dressed in white feathers. He glared at the children and said " You must stop this dancing, for if you do not, a great evil will befall you!" The children waited until the strange old man left and returned to their dancing. The old man would appear often and repeat his warning, but the children didn't listen.

While children enjoyed their dancing, it was not all that hoped for. Then one day one of the boy's came up with an idea. "We should have a feast and we need to ask our parents to provide the food......dancing is hungry work!" The children went and asked their parents. The parents frowned and said " We will not provide a feast for you, you will waste the food! If you are hungry then you must come home and eat!" The children returned the next day with nothing and they all said that the dancing would be better with some food. They continued to dance with empty stomachs.

The children continued to meet each day and dance. One day while they were dancing they found themselves rising up into the air. At first, they thought that their hunger was causing this to happen. "Do not look back" advised on of the girls, "there is something starnge happening."

In the village, a woman saw the children rising into the air, frightened, she called to them to come back. But they did not and kept rising into the sky. The woman called for help saying "We must give them food!" The parents gathered food and held it out to their children, but they did not return to the ground. Only one child looked back and suddenly became a falling star.............

The rest of the children continued to rise into the sky until they reached the heavens where they became the Pleiades. There they remain to this day.............dancing forever in the sky. To see a falling star reminds us of the band of dancing children and recalls their story to our hearts.

Thank you Cat :) I keep meaning to ask you if you'd like a 'As Told By Cat' section in the GG Library... ? it's such a shame to keep losing your storytelling threads as the archives run out!

If you don't mind making a section for the stories, I would love to have one! I have a new section in my own groups for my stories and poems too!
Thanks!!
Hugz!
