] Date Posted: 26/06/07 9:56 hi everyone, haven't posted for a while in fact it's been so long that I doubt you'll remember me! hope everyone is keeping well? I have a question about the snails that I share my garden with and have looked on the web but to no avail, there is this one snail that kinda looks like it has blisters on it, not on the shell but on his skin, looks very painfull and his shell is all floppy, does anyone know what it could be and is there anything I can do to help? also how long do snails live? Thanks Hejira xx [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |

Date Posted: 26/06/07 12:52 Hello Hejira (((hugs))) lovely to see you in the Garden! The average lifespan of our 'common ol Garden snails' [Helix] is about 3 years in the wild - although other species of snails can live for much longer. I'd hazard a guess that the floppy shell may have soemthing to do with a calcium deficiancy... but I'm not sure if there's anything you can do to help... Not sure about the blisters on the skin - there is a parasite (more commonly associated with water snails) which can cause blisters and extreme itching when humans come into contact with it (commonly refered to as swimmers itch) but I don't know how it manifests itself on snails, but once they are infected I believe they are infected for life. But like I said, that's generally an aquatic snail thing... Disease and predators are the main reason our friendly garden snails don't live much past a few years - perhaps you could just leave your snail friend an upturned flower pot for shelter and some food to munch on (wilted leaves, left over fruit and veg pieces). Date Posted: 26/06/07 17:15 hi whitewolf! )))hugs!((( I must say it's nice to be in the garden again, thanks for your advice on the snails, although I seem to have lost track of my blistery snail! I seem to be getting rather attached to all of the snails in my garden at the moment probably because of research I have done on the net, they are fascinating! there was another thing that I keep getting conflicting opinions on and that is if a snails shell gets damaged but the soft part of him is fine will the shell repair itself? I promise no more snail questions! thanks Hejiraxx p.s 5 weeks to go till the big day! yay! can't wait! [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 30/06/07 2:45 "...if a snails shell gets damaged but the soft part of him is fine will the shell repair itself?" It depends how damaged the shell is - small chips and breaks (especially around the rim of the shell) usually heal just fine (snails can store calcium and use it when needed). However, larger breakages may not heal and can be fatal... especially if the holes lead to the snail body drying out. Long live the Snail :) [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
