Friends, not 'mates

Carter, Richards back together with Crosby

By ED MORAN

THE LAST time Jeff Carter and Mike Richards shared the ice with Sidney Crosby, they were playing for Team Canada in the World Junior Hockey Championships.

That is all behind them and now they will take the ice together as three of the top-rated rookies in the NHL. But they will not be teammates.

Crosby makes his Philadelphia debut tonight when the Pittsburgh Penguins make the first of four trips to the Wachovia Center and he will find himself going up against his old friends.

Still, both Carter and Richards are looking forward to seeing Crosby play. "He's an unbelievable player," Carter said. "The first time I played with him he was, like, 15 years old playing World Juniors. The way he plays and the way he carries himself with all the pressure, he does unbelievable."

This will be Crosby's fifth game, and while the Penguins have yet to win, Crosby is in the top 10 in the league in scoring. He is tied with veteran teammate Mark Recchi and two points behind the leaders, Ottawa's Jason Spezza and Atlanta's Marc Savard.

Crosby has a goal and five assists and is living up to the hype that he is one of the best players to come into the league as a teenager since another of his new teammates, Mario Lemieux.

And neither Carter nor Richards is surprised.

"He's as good as they say he is," said Richards, who sports a tattoo on his shoulder commemorating the gold medal he won as captain of that world championship junior team.

"He can get the highlight-reel goals, he makes great plays and he's so strong on the puck in the corners. I think that's the biggest thing. People don't realize that until they seen him."
