Subject: A Modest Proposal **Stargate SG-1**

Disclaimer: I don't own Stargate SG-1, or any of the characters involved.

With that salute, Brigadier General Jack O'Neill passed on the command of Stargate Command. He moved to shake hands with General Hammond, and was instead enveloped in a bear hug from his former C.O.

He pulled away and walked down the ramp to stand in front of Teal'c, whom he embraced in the traditional Jaffa warrior greeting. He then hugged Daniel, who returned the gesture awkwardly.

He moved now to stand in front of Carter. He reached out, but instead of hugging her, he grasped her arm as he sank into a crouch, pulling her with him.

Her eyes searched him in concern, trying to find the source of the problem. Her right arm held his left in an attempt to counterbalance as he brought his right hand up between them, grasping something small in his fingers.

She focused her gaze on the glinting object in his hand, recognizing it almost instantly as her mother's engagement ring, which her father had carried with him after her death.

Sam stood up, pulling Jack with her. The entire group assembled in the Embarkation Room was silent, watching the exchange. Sam's eyes filled with unshed tears as she stared at the ring that had once belonged to her mother.

Carter looked up at the ceiling of the 'Gate Room in an attempt to blink back the offending moisture. Jack watched all these emotions with growing fear. He turned panic-filled eyes towards Daniel, who shrugged helplessly. When Jack looked back at Sam, he found himself staring directly into her eyes, which shone even brighter blue with the tears glistening in them.

She recognized the scared expression on his face, and immediately set to the task of putting his mind at ease. She looked down awkwardly, then back up at him, this time with a small smirk gracing her lips. She gave a tiny, but noticeable nod.

Jack released the breath he didn't know he was holding, and he mirrored her mild smile. Seeing his expression change, Sam's face broke into a full-blown grin, and she reached out with her right hand and grabbed the front of his uniform blazer and pulled him to her in a kiss.

The room broke out into applause as the notoriously side-stepping duo were finally dancing to the same beat. The applause turned into cheers and catcalls as Sam threaded her left hand through Jack's hair, flashing the diamond ring that Jack had covertly slipped onto her finger.

When they pulled apart, Sam's face was flushed, and the tears had spilled over onto her cheeks, but she was smiling.

"So..." Jack said, "was that a 'yes?'"

Sam chuckled and bit on her bottom lip. "Yes, that was a yes."

"Good," he said, then pulled her in for another kiss.
