Michelle Kelso

Michelle Kelso, doctor in sociology at the Michigan University, is the director of the Association for Education and Civic Dialogue in Bucharest. Her first contact with Romania took place in 1993, when she volunteered at an institution for children with disabilities. She came back with a Fulbright scholarship, starting a systematic study about roma people and their history, which materialized in a thesis regarding the deportation of Romanian roma people in Transnistria. She graduated a master in Russian and East European studies and one in public administration at the University of Texas. In 1996 she worked for the Museum of the Holocaust in Washington. During this period, she gathered oral stories of the gypsies about the war. In 1997 she was a consultant for the U.S. AID (the American agency for international development) in a project about the fertility of roma women. Starting with 2001, she worked as a consultant in the German compensation program for the victims of the Holocaust.
Hidden sorrows, is a documentary made by Michelle Kelso, about the history of Romanian roma people who were deported in the Transnistrian concentration camps during World War Two. The survivors talk about their awful experiences and the struggle to stay alive. The movie follows them until today when they apply for founds offered by the German Government and the Swiss banks for the impoverished victims of the Holocaust. In order to make this documentary, Michelle Kelso gathered the stories of over two hundred roma people.

Our school

... or the hut in dileu . for 20 roma students between 6 and 16 in is still our school .

It is a documentary in work, with real people, without scripts, just real life !

The characters out of real life dream to study at the school in Targu lapus and be friends with the romanian students there. They are rejected merely because they are roma !

A documentary in work by Mona Nicoara- who was awarded numerous prizes for her movie Children Underground , including being a nominee at hte Oscar Awardss in 2001 for best documentary- and Miruna Coca-Cozma- has done a number of documentaries including the 20 episode series La Suisse de Batisseurs, broadcasted in 2006 by Television Suisse Romande.

In the fall of 2006 all the roma pupils from Dileu were integrated in the main school in the center as a result of the Ministry of Education’s plan to put an end to segregation. The experiment wasn’t much of a success mainly because of the hostility of the romanian students towards the roma . will the roma roma students remain in the big school, toghether with the romanians, or will they return to the segregated but now reabilitated school ?

Gadjo Dilo

It’s not only a Roma people movie , made a la Kusturica, but a movie saw from their own perspective, thus, already a confession, a reportage. Tony Gatlif is also a rome from Algery, but who emigrated in France. This is a movie that presents the place of roma people in the romanian society, their social rules, their values, traditions and mixed beliefs.
The main characters are Stephane, a parisian whose purpose is to „look for the music”, a feminine voice in specific; then Izidor, a rome from a village near Bucharest, and Sabina, a rome woman whose description would be „like fire”, that has the role of cultural intermediate, as she was a belly dancer in Belgium and knows a little French.
After a series of events, ultimately Stéphane becomes assimilated totally into gypsy society. Tony Gatlif's "Gadjo Dilo" can be seen as part of the larger effort to preserve gypsy culture and society. Ironically, it is Stéphane the "outsider" who is assimilated into their culture and not the other way round. It is not too hard to identify with him as he discovers the joys of everyday gypsy life. There is a closeness and honesty that is obviously missing from the colorless and competitive world of bourgeois society. As our own society becomes more alienated and hate-filled, we will inevitably begin to think about alternatives to our own materialist values.
Rona Hartner will be joining us that projection night of the movie.

Transylvania

Tony Gatlif has a passion for music, especially for the traditional one and makes musical arangements or composes the spirit of the place the action takes place in. Here we have a music from a specific region from Romania.
Tony Gatlif has a passion also for stories about roma people and travels. „Transylvania” is a journey, which tells the story of a young woman who must lose herself in order to rediscover herself in Transylvania, a movie which the critics consider an ode brought to freedom and to the music in this region.
Asia Argento plays Zingarina, a rebellious young woman who leaves for Transylvania to find the man she loves. When she finds him, at a big popular festival in Sighet, she finds out he doesn't love her anymore. Zingarina is accompanied by her friend, Maria (played by Amira Casar), her guardian angel. However, as Maria reminds her of her past, Zingarina parts with her and tries to start things all over again when she falls in love with Tchangalo.
Tony Gatlif is the author of a trilogy about the roma people world, with the parts: ”Les Princes”, „Latcho Drom” and „Gadjo Dilo”. He also signed the script of „Transylvania” which proposes this time also a journey into the roma music and into the traditions, the vitality and the cultural richness of this ethny.
