The 'Akbar' or Heswell Nautical Training School opened on 3rd August 1909 in ten acres of ground at a cost of over £17,000. It was built for the Juvenile Reform Committee who had previously used training ships moored off Tranmere, but an ageing ship with rotten timbers had convinced them to build a more permanent shore station. The nautical school which was organised on Navy standards, was best known locally for its band which appeared at most of the local events. It was one of eight training schools to be shut down when it finally closed on 16th February 1965.
