First off let me say that I AGREE with the concept that tradional sport style...especially as practiced in contemporary "SPORT" clubs....is not the best way to create a bodyguard for applied protection....matter of fact, I have said many times before that I have learned that a dog has a better chance of re-acting in real time if he has NO training at all!...BUT...all this certainly depends to some degreee on of which dog we speak!.......This being said, I also feel that COMPETITIVE SPORT offers a trainer a great chance to GROW...to expand thier overall understanding of DOG TRAINING....and.....DOG BEHAVIOR...as well as to offer evidence of thier skills..devotion....and willingness to put these on display. The "TRIAL" also has many instances where it DOES correctly evaluate the overall working capacity of the dog being tested......I believe that a professional dog trainer should have no problem adjusting his approach to meet these requirements....and any others.I have also come to the conclusion that in order to accurately dis-credit..or to analyze the shortcomming of any discipline...one must MASTER it first!...Otherwise we run the great probability of missing many assets that exist...and instead focusing on a single or few shortcommings....overall this produces a very innaccurate and biased "analysis"....We are like the scientist who ignores evidence to the contrary of his pet "theroy".......I have learned the hard way.....that there exists a mind set which prevents us from all growth....all learning...and all understanding...this mind set is "CONTEMPT PRIOR TO INVESTIGATION"!...we humans often form very strong opinions about subjects which we know little or nothing about!.....I have been guilty of it myself.....as we all have. I have learned to GUARD against this attitude.....as I have found this to be the most crippling of handicapps.......
