For those that don't know...

Hurn Bridge Sports Ground is owned by Christchurch Borough Council. The clubhouse is also owned by them. A few years ago, Poole Sports Trust pulled out and Christchurch were faced with the real possibility of having no facilities on site.

Christchurch FC then approached the Council and asked if they could run it. The Council agreed, but the site had to be run for the benefit of all site users (Christchurch FC, Christchurch Cricket Club, Bournemouth FA, Dorset Cricket Centre, Hurn Parish Council, Christchurch Angling Club, the Darts team and now also Avon Valley Skittles League) and a limited company had to be set up. So now Christchurch FC Limited was created, originally set up by three members of the football club committee.

Any profit made from the site has to be ploughed back into the site for the benefit of all users. We are slowly trying to improve the facilities and without doubt the football pitch has had significant investment made over the years. We are now starting to move our focus to putting money into the cricket pitch and try and improve that.

I'm not sure that people understand exactly how much it costs to run a club like this. We certainly haven't made any way near the amount of money required to pay any players and being a not-for-profit company for the whole site, no money would ever be placed that way. There is constantly a list of things that need doing, the clubhouse was certainly in a state of disarray and we are having to replace infrastructure stuff such as the heating (over the next few months), carpets, furniture etc.

Unfortunately, we suffer from being classed as a commercial premises and therefore attract commercial costs, such as £115 per month for SKY TV!!!

What we have always said, is that we will provide as much as we can for all of our users, when we can. Whether it be the room for free (as we always provide) for fundraising etc. or drinks or food free when possible.

As for the Wessex League, I agree that some teams will always dominate whenever they pay the wages they do and there will always be minnows amongst them. However, doesn't that reflect real life, such as the Premiership, where there is without doubt, the big four and then most of the others, followed by the smallest that are likely to drop every time?

Wessex League football can be very exciting to watch and provides some great games. But as always, it can sometiems provide poor games and bore draws, but that's football!!!
