technically it does not matter what you eat. calories are calories. if you eat 800 calories your body is filled with 800 elements of energy. But there are some things that can slow down or speed up your metabolism which can explain the candy/ordinary food issue, these things are very different for different people so it really depends on the person:

1) some things are harder to digest and the digestation uses energy, these things are things with high fiber or very complicated foods (with lots of ingredients like candy)and raw veggies.

2) a lot of sugar can boost your metabolism, so when eating 800 cals of candy you might get so much sugar in your system that you burn faster, the same works for caffeine.

3) alcohol slows everything down and is an empty calorie. This means that the only thing it contains are calories and thus the only thing it does is give your body energy but it does not do any other thing. Other foods also contain nutricients.

4) there are other foods that really are person depended that speed up your metabolism. Mostly these are the foods that give you a natural diarea. (some people have it with unions or apples but it could be something completely different) basically this is dependent on what your intestants are sensitive with.
