Maryland Stars 2008/2009 Tryouts -- Glen Warholic, 11:19:47 08/01/08 Fri
The Maryland Stars will be holding tryouts for the 2008/2009 season August 10 and August 17 at Mayeski Park in Sykesville, MD.
As in years past the Stars will be fielding teams at 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U.
All Maryland Stars teams play a fall schedule (3-5 events). The Stars 18U team plays a fall showcase schedule and showcase-loaded tournament schedule in the spring and summer. The younger teams play 10-12 tournament schedule in the spring and summer and attend a national event.
Maryland Stars teams fair well at the local, regional, and national level. The Stars program hosts clinics (pitching, hitting, catching, etc) to assist the player skill development. The Stars also host program wide fundraisers to keep costs down to the players/parents.

2007/2008 Tryouts for the Maryland Stars -- Glen Warholic, 07:05:34 07/25/07 Wed
Tryouts for the 2007/2008 Maryland STARS Teams are scheduled as follows:
Players who cannot make these dates and times should contact the Maryland STARS director and set up an individual tryout such that it is completed prior to the scheduled tryout dates.
All players must tryout. All roster spots are open to new and current players. Players should try to make both tryout dates. If they can only make one, please insure the STARS know in advance.
Players may register in advance by downloading this form, completing it and then bringing it with them when they attend the tryouts.
Players should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start of tryouts to register and stretch/warm up. The tryouts will start promptly at the scheduled time.
Pitchers and catchers will need to stay an extra 30 minutes to tryout for these specialty positions.
If weather affects tryouts (postponement), up to date information can be found at the Maryland STARS guestbook, please check it . Date Time Location Age Group

USSSA Rec Caliber Team Tournaments -- Glen Warholic, 06:31:43 04/12/07 Thu
The United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) of Maryland is hosting five girls fastpitch softball tournaments for rec-caliber teams during the 2007 season.
These tournaments are for teams from recreational leagues, all-star teams from recreational leagues, county league teams and other teams of this caliber. Select teams that routinely play tournaments throughout the spring and summer are not permitted to play in these tournaments.
This provides these types of teams with the opportunity to play other teams of their caliber and a chance for a more enjoyable tournament experience.
These tournaments provide a great way to introduce your players and parents to the tournament environment and to the next level of play. They provide great motivation for players to work hard, increase their abilities and strive to become better players. They are also a great way to cap off your team’s season or treat your league all-stars. The tournaments are scheduled in July when most leagues are winding down.

The point of contact for the Early Bird Invitational, Winfield CLASSiC, Mid Atlantic Recreational Open, and Mid Summer Challenge is Glen Warholic, 443-745-3177, gawarho@marylandstars.org, www.marylandstars.org.
All of these tournaments feature awards for 1st and 2nd place for the team and the individual players. A three game guarantee (two games of pool play to seed teams into single elimination) provides each team with the opportunity to play all of their players.
To insure that your team gets to play in one of more of these tournaments, please sanction with USSSA, and then register and pay for the tournaments your team wants to play. These events have gained great popularity in the state and surrounding areas. Just last year over 20 teams were locked out of these events due to them filling up before these teams registered and paid. Please plan early.
All teams must be registered with USSSA and properly insured with $2M liability insurance.

NCAA Calendar revision -- Maryland Stars, 14:15:01 01/24/07 Wed
I copied this post from eteamz.com message board. It is from Gary Haning, head coach of the OC Batbusters, the reigning 18U Gold National Champions.
As many of you may or may not know, the NCAA has a proposal outstand and being reviewed that if passed would significantly limit the numbe of college exposure events held in the fall. Effectively the showcase events could be played during a 4 week period between the middle of October and the middle of November.
Not only does it reduce the timeframe but because of the limited time a college coach has to observe players at these events, they will have to pick and choose carefully which events they can attend thereby reducing the chance of seeing many of the good players out there.
Below is Gary's post and suggestions on what we (coaches, players, parents of players and other people with a vested interest in this). Gary has made it very easy to send your comments to the NCAA coaches who have a big say in the voting by listing the email addresses at his web site and the letter he wrote to them.

For those of you who wish to help us fight the shortening of the fall recruiting window for softball, I have posted on my website http://ocbatbusters.com, a letter which I wrote and a letter and much information courtesy of Rayburn Hesse.
Also there is a list of email addresses from Ron Pitzenberger of the Texas Sudden Impact who took the time to research the Conference reps.
While reading Rayburn's information I learned that since this proposal was sent to the NCAA Membership for comment, it now will need only a simple majority to pass when considered again in April. That means if we do not change the votes of about 10 people, it will pass. Please help if you feel this rule is a bad rule as I do.

For those of you who haven't heard, a new Indoor Baseball and Softball Training Center is only a few weeks from opening.
Extra Innings-Upper Marlboro is Southern Maryland's premier baseball & softball training facility - dedicated to fulfilling the needs of players of all ages and abilities. Extra Innings state of the art, year round, indoor training facility has over 17,000 square feet of indoor training area with 24 foot high ceilings. Our indoor facility includes 8 multi-purpose batting tunnels, 3 automated timer-operated batting cages, a fully stocked pro shop, members-only training room and a birthday & team party area.

Maryland Stars 2007 Tryouts -- Glen Warholic, 06:24:02 08/01/06 Tue
Tryouts for the 2007 Maryland STARS Teams are scheduled as follows:
Players who cannot make these dates and times should contact the Maryland STARS director and set up an individual tryout such that it is completed prior to the scheduled tryout dates.
All players must tryout. All roster spots are open to new and current players. Players should try to make both tryout dates. If they can only make one, please insure the STARS know in advance.
Players may register in advance by downloading a registration form from the Stars web site, www.marylandstars.org/pages/current/tryouts.htm , completing it and then bringing it with them when they attend the tryouts.
Players should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start of tryouts to register and stretch/warm up. The tryouts will start promptly at the scheduled time.
In conjunction with the tryouts for the Maryland Stars, the Winfield Sting Central Maryland League teams will hold tryouts. The Sting has teams at 10 and 12&under.
Pitchers and catchers will need to stay an extra 30 minutes to tryout for these specialty positions.
If weather affects tryouts (postponement), up to date information can be found at the Maryland STARS guestbook, please check it .

8/13 and 8/20 1:00-3:00pm Mayeski Park 10U and 12U
8/13 and 8/20 3:00-5:00pm Mayeski Park 14U
8/13 and 8/20 5:00-7:00pm Mayeski Park 16U and 18U
Directions to Mayeski Park fields can be found at the STARS website, www.marylandstars.org .
Please bring your softball equipment and if possible wear a shirt with your name and/or number on it. Thank you.
If you cannot make the specified times, please contact the STARS immediately and an individual tryout can be arranged.
Age cutoff is 12/31/2006. Example: if a player is 12 or younger on 12/31/2006 she can play 12&under for the 2007 season even if she turns 13 as early as 1/1/2007. For more information on tryouts or to schedule an individual tryout, contact the STARS or call Glen Warholic at 410-552-1838 or gawarho@marylandstars.org.
