America’s Happiest Musical,Singin’ in the Rain,Opens at the Forestburgh Theatre Arts Center

The Forestburgh Theatre Arts Center (FTAC) at the Forestburgh Playhouse presents live on stage one of the most beloved American musicals ever, Singin’ in the Rain, which opens Tuesday July 20th and plays through Sunday August 1st.

This stage adaption of the 1952 musical film starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds openedon Broadway in 1985, and has been playing in theatres around the country ever since. “This is a real audience favorite, and is a show that is guaranteed to leave an audience smiling,” said Managing Director Norman Duttweiler. “Director Sarah Norris has assembled a terrific cast which really does the piece justice. If you like great songs, comedy, and tap dancing, you won’t want to miss this one.”

Singin’ in the Rain is a comic Hollywood love story set in the late 1920s when Hollywood and its silent stars were making the rocky transition to talking films. The book, taken directly from Betty Comden’s and Adolph Green’s screenplay, sparkles with snappy vaudevillian one-liners and crazy comic characters. But it is the musical score, by Nacio Herb Brown and ArthurFreed, which is probably most well known. Playhouse audiences will hear such favorites as “You Stepped out of a Dream,”“Make ‘Em Laugh,”“You Are My Lucky Star,” “Good Morning,” and of course “Singin’ in the Rain.”

Portraying the role of leading man Don Lockwood is Brandon Davidson, who most recently starred on Theatre Row in New York as Billy in Looking for Billy Haines and appeared with Sandy Duncan and Rosie O’Donnell in No, No, Nanette in the Encores series. James LaRosa plays his sidekick Cosmo Brown; his New York credits include HMS Pinafore at City Center and Sleeping Beauty and the Beast at the York Theatre Company. The leading ladies are portrayed by two actresses already familiar to Playhouse audiences: Georgia Tapp, who most recently appeared as Diana Morales in the Playhouse production of A Chorus Line plays ingénue Kathy Selden, and Zoe Kassay, who just played Val in A Chorus Line, plays the silent film star who squawks rather than talks, Lina Lamont., Two other Playhouse regulars round out the cast: Jim Bray, who appeared in Avenue Q earlier this season plays Roscoe Dexter, the overwrought film director and KevinConfoy who most recently played the choreographer Zack in A Chorus Line plays the equally wacky producer, RF Simpson.

.

“The original film ranks in fifth place in the American Film Institute’s list of 100 greatest American films ever made, and presenting it live on stage brings its magic to an entirely new audience,” said director Sarah Norris. “And it will actually rain on the stage at the Forestburgh Playhouse!”

The Cabaret during Singin’ in the RainisThe Miscast Cabaret, a comic cabaret featuring great songs sung by the wrong singers. Call for reservations at the Box Office the night of the performance.

Singin’ in the Rain runs from now until Sunday, August 1st. There are seven shows a week: Tuesday through Saturday at 8 PM, with matinees on Wednesday and Sunday. Ticket prices range from $33 to $40. Please call the Forestburgh Theatre Arts Center Box Office at (845) 794-1194 for tickets. For additional information, please check out the website: http://www.fbplayhouse.org .
