“Fiddler on the Roof” Opens at Forestburgh Theatre Arts Center

Broadway Veteran Ed Romanoff to star as Tevye

The Forestburgh Theatre Arts Center (FTAC) is presenting the critically acclaimed musical Fiddler on the Roof as the last musical of its 2010 season. The story focuses on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his efforts to maintain his family and religious traditions when outside influences threaten their daily lives. He must balance the strong-willed nature of his three oldest daughters as they choose husbands outside their religious faiths as well as cope with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jewish population of his home, Anatevka.

The original Broadway production opened in 1964 and became the first show in musical theatre history to surpass the 3,000 performance mark. The show won nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical and is one of the most popular shows produced today. The music is by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and a book by Joseph Stein. Fiddler on the Roof is based on the stories of Sholem Aleichem titled Tevye and his Daughters (or Tevye the Milkman). Audiences know and love the score, with such hits as “Tradition”, “Matchmaker, Matchmaker”, and “If I Were a Rich Man”, to name just a few.

The Forestburgh Playhouse is fortunate to have Broadway actor Ed Romanoff in the pivotal role of Tevye. Romanoff has been on Broadway in Hairspray, The Most Happy Fella, Annie, and Children & Art: Sondheim 75th Celebration. Returning to the Forestburgh stage are Claudia Schneider and Madeline Shaw in the roles of Golde and Yente respectively; roles they both portrayed the last time the show was produced here. Audiences will also remember Schneider from Best Little Whorehouse…, The Last Night of Ballyhoo, The Diary of Anne Frank, Steel Magnolias, Brighton Beach, and Broadway Bound. Shaw is another fixture of this stage, in such shows as The Tale of the Allergist's Wife, Grease, Funny Girl, Steel Magnolias, and Crossing Delancy. Allen Lewis Rickman, in the role of Lazar Wolf, was last seen at Forestburgh in Born Yesterday. He is a staple of the off-Broadway Yiddish theatre scene. Rounding out the equity actors is Georgia Tapp in the role of Hodel. Tapp has been a member of the Resident Company the last two summers, starring as Kathy Selden in Singin’ in the Rain and Diana Morales in A Chorus Line this year.

“Fiddler on the Roof is one of the most beloved musicals of the stage”, said Director/Scenic Designer Ron Nash. “This incredible cast of professional and local actors captures the beauty of the story, making audiences laugh and cry and want to sing-a-long.”

The post-show cabaret during Fiddler on the Roof is All That Jazz: The Music of Kander and Ebb.For reservations, please call the Box Office the day of the show.

Fiddler on the Roof runs through Sunday, August 29. There are seven shows a week: Tuesday through Saturday at 8 PM, with matinees on Wednesday and Sunday. Ticket prices range from $33 to $40.
