The Warwick Arts Festival: Water and Stone

The Warwick Summer Arts Festival goes from the global to the local, presenting performing artists from Zimbabwe, Belfast, Canada, and Mexico, visual artists from around the Hudson Valley and culminating with Water and Stone, a theater performance inspired by stories of Warwick. The Festival runs from July 9th through July 18th and takes place at sites around the town of Warwick.

The Festival opens on Friday, July 9th, beginning at 7:00 P.M. The public is invited the Village of Warwick to see events at Railroad Green and to visit the new gallery at the Vastu yoga center. Play and paint on the Water Wall created by artists Ron Gee, Janet Fatta and Heidi Bilezikian; make spiral origami with Rob Gulick; sit across from your neighbor at Glen Carter’s Table for Talking; and wander the village to see art in the storefronts. Join in a dance created by Choreographer Linda Mensch, Artistic Director of The Moving Company Modern Dance Center Come to a morning rehearsal with the company and be in the performance at 7:30 in the evening. Participants can join the dancers or the musicians. No experience is necessary! Call Linda at 845-986-5359. The Gallery at Vastu, 17 Main Street, presents Stone and Water, an exhibition by regional artists.

On Saturday at 7:00 P.M., July 10th, The Festival welcomes Zimbabwe's popular music star Chiwoniso Maraire to Stanley Deming Park. "I am like a mirror," she says describing her songs. "I sing about what I see happening in the world. If someone comes up to me in the street to ask for money I'll sing about that. If people are jumping borders because their economic situation is too difficult, I'll sing about that. If the police are beating people up and intimidating them, I'll sing about that." Former lead vocalist for A Peace of Ebony, Zimbabwe’s first hip-hop band, Chiwonsino began developing her own sound ten years ago reflecting her deep, multi-cultural influences from soul to reggae to rock. The entrancing sounds of the mbira serve as a central underpinning for the songs in her most recent recording, Rebel Woman. Originating in the ancient Shona civilization of southern Africa, the mbira is an essential element of Zimbabwean music tradition and has a deep historical, cultural and spiritual symbolism.

Opening for Chiwoniso is Warwick’s own E’lissa Jones Band. E'lissa Jones is a professional singer, prolific songwriter, violinist, pianist, and guitarist. She is an exceptionally talented artist and her songs embrace audiences with the influential stylings of folk music, jazz, rock, and R&B in her catalogue of over 250 original songs. She is performing with band members Mickey Kopchak on bass, Julio Rosaly and Mark McNutt on electric guitar, and Michael Hickey on drums. lively performances of catchy melodies and rich lyrics.

Rana Santacruz will perform on Sunday at 7:00 P.M., July 10th at The Thomas P. Morahan Waterfront Park in Greenwood Lake. Santacruz is a Mexican musician who lives in Brooklyn, NY. His music has been called "Mexican Bluegrass" or "Irish Mariachi" with a dose of rock and alternative. His sound starts in Ireland, runs through Appalachia, swings through New Orleans, and careens across most of Mexico. The acoustic instrumentation includes cajón, upright bass, accordion, guitar, banjo, jarana, violin and trumpet. He cites his main influences as The Pogues, Tom Waits, Chavela Vargas, Agustín Lara, son jarocho, tambora, and folk music in general. Lyrically, his songs tell short tales about broken hearts, sailors, dogs, turkeys, and farewells.

Friday night, at 7:00 p.m., July 16th, McPeake arrives at Scheuermann Farm and Greenhouses direct from Belfast, Ireland. McPeake has a creative approach to music, blending influences from Irish traditional, folk, acoustic and country genres to create their own unique sound that is an experience for the ears and soul. For generations of folk music enthusiasts the name of the McPeake Family of Belfast has stood for one of the most distinctive sounds in Irish music. Founder Francis McPeake IV, the fourth generation of this world-famous musical dynasty is one of the few authentic uilleann pipers in the world today. The accomplished band members have performed with many international artists including Van Morrison, Mary Black, Ronan Keating, The McPeake Family, Riverdance, John Hurt, Denis Hopper, The Chieftains and more.

On Saturday night at 7:00 p.m., the Festival returns to Scheuermann Farm to welcome the astounding young singer/songwriter duet DALA. Sheila and Amanda formed DALA soon after their first meeting in their high school music class. In the summer of 2005 these best friends signed a major label deal with Universal Music Canada and their debut album 'Angels and Thieves' was released the same year. With vocal harmonies guaranteed to give you chills, the girls also make use of their talents on guitar and piano to create their unique brand of acoustic pop. Dala's fun and energetic stage presence has made them a fan favourite at festivals across the country. They have toured constantly over the past three years, opening for the likes of Tom Cochrane, Matthew Good, Jann Arden and most recently, Stuart McLean of the CBC's Vinyl Cafe. Dala's abums "Angels and Thieves" and "Who Do You Think You Are" earned them four Canadian Folk Music Award nominations. They are currently working on their fourth album, set to be released in 2009.

The Festivals final performance on Sunday at 6:00 P.M., July 18th is a performance piece born out of Warwick’s own. Performed at dusk atop the Pennings Orchard on the final night of the Festival, Water and Stone celebrates the rich soil of the Warwick Valley and the many people whose stories have defined it. The piece is the result of a year-long community-based process in which playwright Will MacAdams interviewed local farmers, farm workers, and other residents about their relationship to the land and to the seasons. Stories shared included farmers describing last season’s tomato blight, Florida residents recalling the onion harvest festival, farm workers describing the richness of the black dirt, and others describing development and change in Warwick across generations.

These stories form the heart of Water and Stone, a community play that weaves together poetry, music, and dance. It will be performed by actors, musicians, and dancers from Isis Movement, a modern dance company led by Warwick native Melissa Padham, which thrilled audiences at Sheuermann Farms during last year’s Festival. As audiences watch the sunset across the valley, they will hear and see the stories of their neighbors, their family members, and residents who have come before them. The event is a rare opportunity to remember Warwick’s past, reflect on its future, and celebrate the power of stories to build common ground.

MacAdams is a community-based theater maker who creates original plays inspired by local stories. He has worked in theater in South Africa, Indonesia, and throughout the United States bringing together actors, activists, elders, young people and artists. Past work includes: Peter Handke’s Kaspar, performed by graduate level theater students in Johannesburg ; Eye to Eye, create by young people and future police officers from New Haven, CT; and Awaken New Haven, a five-hour, four neighborhood theatrical event that brought audiences to diverse locations across the city of New Haven.

The rain site for the concerts is generously provided by the Warwick Reformed Church. Rain site for Water and Stone is at the Pennings Farm Market.

And there’s more. Local artist Daniel Mack is leading two Art Adventure Tours: on July 10th join him on a guided hike to Fitzgerald Falls on the Greenwood Lake/Monroe border and on July 17th for a ‘playtime in the stones and water’ of the Doublekill Creek n New Milford. Both tours will meet at Railroad Green to start and are open to the first 15 people. On July 15th, Dan invites participants to a creativity workshop “Working by Moonlight” at his studio on Welling Avenue. Contact him at for more information www.danielmack.com

Artists Janet Howard Fatta and Heidi Bilezikian invite everyone to join in a collaborative art piece. Using WATER and STONE as an inspiration, participants are asked to create a piece on a 3” x 5” card using any medium. Drop the cards at a designated box at Cafe A La Mode or Tuscan Cafe. The cards will be picked up on July 8th and then displayed together creating one piece. For more information www.jhowardstudios.com

And throughout the Festival look for the Roving Farm and Food Talks, impromptu inter-generational conversations about our farms, food, local & fresh.
